Friday, 6 May 202218'sOrrell St JamesAway44-0We played our next round of the Lancashire Cup on Friday evening in very wet conditions over at Orrell. The rain started before kick-off and never stopped all game, it didn’t dampen our spirits though and Judes put in a very clinical and determined performance.

Judes came out the blocks from the starting whistle and good defensive pressure forced an Orrell knock-on gifting Judes the ball. Judes set up one of their set moves and a fantastic line run by Calum P was perfectly timed to dive over and score our first of the half. Judes kept the defensive pressure on and it wasn’t long before our man of the match Callum S took control of our attack and took on the line himself, broke through and sped off, still having the fullback to beat, which he did with ease, to score right under the sticks. Judes started to build momentum in the game and our attack was relentless, teamed with strong defence, we slowly took control of the game. A cheeky dart from our hooker Danny, shot over the line and defenders tried their best to hold him up, but he showed great strength rolling over to get the ball down, to register a try for himself. Judes were now tightening the screw and another set move bore fruit for Calum P who ran strong all half and was rewarded with a second try. The half was finished strongly by Logan scoring a brilliant try on the wing after an Orrell error, gifted the ball to Judes and they quickly turned defence into attack, with ball through hands, it went out to Logan, who finished the move with a four pointer in the corner. All tries were converted well first half by Brook, who knew he was superb at kicking through the H’s! Judes went in with a commanding lead 30-0.

We started the second half were we left off with a quick-fire try and his first of the season for James Richardson. Callum S did a fantastic kick and chase and the ball ricocheted off the Orrell player and James was on hand to collect the ball and still with defenders to beat made it to the line and plonked the ball down, scoring a great opportunist try. In the next patch Judes had to soak up some Orrell pressure and they almost came close to scoring, but great defence ensured we kept that all important nil. Considering the weather, Judes played some brilliant inventive rugby and put their bodies on the line when needed, strong hand-offs, charge downs, accurate kicking and strong carries from our forwards really stood out in the game. Orrell put in a testing kick, which became a foot race with our fullback Jack, but there was only one winner and he dealt with the ball superbly, in full control on a wet surface! We got our scoring back on track courtesy of Brogan who is a strong player and never fails to score in a game. He just ran hard and darted through a gap to steam off to the line, successfully converted by our new kicker Callum S (hahaha). Judes finished the game on a high when a loose ball was scooped up by Lukas who had he full length of the field to go, not easy at all at the end of a game, but he pinned his ears back and got to the line untouched for an awesome individual try and put us 44-0 to the good. The game came to an end after another accurate kick from Roman bounced into touch, bringing the final whistle and a commanding victory.

We certainly bounced back in style this week and had the luxury of a subs bench! A very mature and disciplined performance from the lads tonight in what was a perfect game to get us through to the Quarter Finals of the Lancashire Cup. All 16 lads competed and contributed to the match, it was amazing to get such a solid win and nice to see some new try scorers. Well Done lads you were all brilliant, let’s build on that going forward and hope it rains every week!!
Sunday, 8 May 202213's - MaroonsLeigh EastHome32-6It seemed a lifetime ago since the Maroons last stepped onto a rugby field in a league match. It was 17 days ago to be precise. The boys were raring to just get back onto that field again. I know you probably all knew this but it was Enrique Iglesias’ birthday yesterday, 47 years old. The Maroons were looking to be Heroes themselves out on the pitch at WN3. The lads reading this frantically googling Enrique….
This would be the first of 3 games in 7 days so we would need to utilise the squad and keep all the players fresh for the tests ahead.
Right onto the game now, we were up against Leigh East Bears, we had only recently played them in a cup game last month so we knew what the opposition would be like. They would give it their all.
It was an extremely fast start for the Maroons, some great running from Harley and Harry and Zac powered his way through to open the scoring. Not many are getting in front of this lad when he is in full flow. Billy imperious as always with the boot. The Maroons wanted to go for the throat here and pile some points on early. A fantastic run forward from Joel and a penalty was conceded for a high tackle. I predicted this was going to happen… tap by Joel, through about 4 bodies and over the whitewash. Billy with a conversion in front of the sticks.
The Maroons were really on the charge now and some terrific running from Harry providing a pass to Ellis who went over underneath the sticks. Billy with another conversion
Although we were on the attack from much of the first half, some great tackles from Caden, Jacob and the machine Jack Worthy keeping the opposition to nil.
The Maroons were back on the attack and Jacob who has become a revelation at centre with a great run to go over for another try. He also works great alongside the wingers next to him. Always communicating with each other. Billy doesn’t miss from in front or anywhere really.
There was no stopping the Maroons today, attack after attack and Thomas elegant as ever glided his way through the Leigh defence to go over to extend the lead further. Billy kick
I missed the try before half time as I was on a chip butty run but I heard on the grapevine that it was a full lengther from Jacob.
A few changes made at half time but this did not stop the flow of the Jude’s attacks, everyone in the squad knows their jobs and they never let anyone down. Some great running by Kyle made great metres and the ball was passed across the right wing where C Billy went over. He converted his own try. Then some great defence in the corner from Jack and Caleb keeping Leigh scoreless.
We got up the pitch again and Zac handed off a few and went over in the corner. Another double for him. A tough kick on the edge missed by Billy. 46-0. More pressure on the Leigh defence and Thomas was able to get over for a double too. Billy with yet another conversion.
Some penalties conceded and Leigh were very much on the attack and then they went over for a deserved try. Converted from in front
I must have missed the 2nd Ellis Corfield try so I’m not even sure if it was at the end or not. If it wasn’t this whole report is wrong but hey. Another double for Ellis too.

A great display from the Maroons in a big week for them. All the lads putting in a great shift. Onto the next one away at Hindley on Wednesday. Well done everyone!
Sunday, 8 May 202212'sLeigh EastAway4-10Although St Judes suffered another narrow defeat, there were many signs of improvement and lots of good foundations to build on.

Dominant in defence, St Judes were certainly the better team in the first quarter as their aggressive style forced the opposition into errors and mistakes. Judes created several opportunities but couldn't quite convert this into points.

Towards, the back end of the first half, the tables turned and Leigh East fought back. A couple of quick tries put Leigh East 10-0 ahead at half time but not before George Burrows put in another of his trademark try-saving tackles.

St Judes came out fighting in the second-half and it turned out to be a much more even contest. The Judes forwards were outstanding in the second half with Connor Briggs, Dylan Donnelly, Harvey Woolfenden, Joshua Stott and Jack Fullerton working tirelessly to hammer the Leigh defence. Judes did get over the line on several occasions but were unfortunately held up each time.

Eventually, the hard work paid off as Leigh East fumbled the ball on their own line right into the hands of Jamie Gaskell who grounded the ball to make it 10-4.

With three minutes to go, Judes gave everything to get over for a late try but on this occasion, it was not to be. The lads now look forward to a cup match at home against local rivals, St Pats, on Wednesday evening.

Sunday, 8 May 202210's - GoldsFolly LaneHome08 - 24A great game and superb effort by everyone. Despite coming away with a loss every single player should be proud of themselves. We knew we were up for a difficult game yet thanks to some great attacking and defence the game was much closer than the score suggests. It was nice to see the kids playing as a team and everyone getting a chance to show their skills. Even the opposition commented on how well we all played.
