Crosfields 10 v 26 Wigan St Judes

The boys have had a tough few weeks training in preparation for the upcoming games and it all came to fruition today. Warm up was good, attitude was spot on and we made Crosfields aware of our threat from minute 1. We completed 2 of our first 3 sets which put us in good stead for our first try. Good play to get up the field and then a long range pass from Jake to Kyle and then Kyle to Declan who raced in on the wing. Crosfields hit back to go 6-4 in front and that was the only time they were to lead through the game. 2 identical scores through clever play from Leon and Liam to create the overlap on the right to get Liam over for 2 tries. Half time 10-14.
Second half we wanted more of the same and we got it. The game went a further 15 minutes without any scores and we were looking good. Liam broke through from a scrum and ended up getting caught, but the identical happened again and he didn’t make any mistake in claiming his hat trick. We had Crosfields rattled and they came up with mistakes and pressured last play options. Finally another scrum saw Declan charge through to complete the scoring and see us go on to win the game and progress to the semi final. Well deserved. A great game from both teams.

Judes 16 v Halton 4

If we didn’t need any more motivation to beat our closest rivals Halton, in the Lancashire Cup, the fact that they think were “done” and it’s their year, just gave us that extra determination to show them how it is done!!

We knew this game would be a tough affair and both teams went toe to toe in the first half. Junior went close steaming onto a ball, which unfortunately ricocheted off his chest. Judes were patient though and made sure they completed their sets. Good defensive pressure paid off when Halton knock on close to their line and Reece Stanton was the first to react, heading for the line and kept those long legs pumping to get over the line and score. Converted by Callum Silcock, gave us the settler in the game at 6-0. Judes seem to relax in defence and gave Halton too many metres which allowed them to put the ball to the wing and go for the line, but a great defence read from Reagan and Junior force the player over the side-line. After a mistake from Judes, the ball was gifted to Halton and with quick hands down the line, our defence didn’t slide fast enough this time and Halton made us pay by squeezing in the corner. With the conversion missed, Judes still hung onto the lead . Better defence in the dying seconds of the half, saw Halton forced into touch again, a scrum awarded to Judes, but time beat everyone and ended a very tough half 6-4, with nothing in the 2 teams.

This game could go either way and it was all down to who wanted it more in the second half. I think whoever was first to crack, was going to take this game and thankfully a knock-on from Halton gave Judes the opportunity to turn this game in their favour. Good ball down the line into McKenzie Davies’s hands, but he still had lots to do get over the whitewash, sheer determination and good body strength, took McKenzie over and finished a superb try to put them 10-4 up. With every passing minute Judes ground away at this game to gain control, putting big hit after big hit in. Judes really started to get a wriggle on and Lewis Pinder got hold of the ball and backed himself to dart for the line taking the Halton defence by surprise, to score at the side of the sticks, converted by Callum Silcock. Judes outstanding defence really started to cause Halton problems and they found it hard to get out of their own half and really trouble our line. Everything started to go right for Judes, when Ryan switched to full-back and really put a spark into Judes attacking line. The tackle of the game can’t go un-noted, after a cheeky kick from Ben, bobbled and was followed up by Harvey, their fullback regathered and was punished by Harvey who immediately smashed him to the ground, what a shot! Ryan was hungry to score this half and tried everything in his power to get to that try-line, unfortunately it wasn’t to be today, but you can’t knock his effort. Junior almost had the last say of the game, by getting over the line, but unfortunately was held up by strong Halton defence. The second half finished almost identically as the first, as Judes force their opponents into touch for the scrum, unfortunately the clock beat us, but gave us the emphatic win 16-4 and put us in the draw for the semi-finals!

Well what a day to bring out your best performance of the season so far! Some of our crunching tackles, were out of this world, you could almost feel them on the side-lines! The intensity of the game really zapped our energy first half, but a good half time rest and team talk, empowered the lads to a flawless second half display to topple our rivals. Well done boys, bring on the Semis!!

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort: Lewis Pinder, played out of position today, but showed great attitude, just shows the versatility of this lad.
Outstanding Effort: Richard Nsemba, massive game today, always a presence on the pitch due to his sheer size, but had an outstanding game and really put himself about on the pitch.
Man of the Match: Ryan Wood, switched to the full-back position second half and absolutely shone, played out of his skin and a well deserved man of the match.

WIGAN ST JUDES U12S GOLDS: 38 WATERHEAD WARRIORS U12S: 6

Having done brilliantly in the group stages, Judes had managed to make it into the NWC Cup Quarter Finals. Usually, teams in our group would find themselves contesting for the plate so we were really proud of them for just managing to stay in the running for the main cup at our age group.

The game began in the worst way for Judes, a spill from a long Waterhead kick off saw Waterhead with ball in hand just 10 metres out. Three hard Waterhead runs was all it took to rock a shaky Judes pack and we found ourselves behind within a minute of the first half. Try converted, Waterhead leading early 0-6

Judes hit back quickly though and having sorted themselves at the back, they received the following kick very well. Big forward Jake Hare powering the ball up field and dragging the Waterhead pack on his back to the half way line. Elton Paplekaj then jumped down behind the ball and, fending off three defenders, managed to force through the Warriors defence and cross the line to rectify our poor start. Dylan Gregory sinking his kick and levelling the scores. 6-6

The lads looked unstoppable from this point on. Our trusty number 1, Austin, was a question mark for today. He had missed training the day before with flu symptoms and asthma taking it's toll on him so we had asked the lads to make sure he did as little as possible today. He directed at the back and the defensive line stayed strong just refusing to let The Warriors break through and keeping Austin's cover tackling to a minimum. Austin was left to concentrate on the high balls, perfect catches and returns and he did so with ease today.

Two tries from the big guy next saw the Judes take a comfortable lead. Big Forward Malachi Leo Price managing to scoot from 30m out breaking the line with ease to score under the sticks - Converted by Keegan Mobey. Followed by another good attacking Judes' set with the ball travelling quickly through hands - usually a task for our backs - but our big dozy forwards linked in well today with Prop Jake Hare whipping the ball out wide to find a waiting Mal for his second try just minute apart. Tom Hill adding the extras 18-6

The final try of the half came from more great hands. Ferocious defending and great marker play from Oliver Wright and Malachi Price really shaking the Waterhead attack and a whole team defensive effort saw Judes repeatedly pinning The Warriors in their own half. Waterhead forced to kick early on many occasions throughout the game as a result of the Judes constant pressure and aggressive play. We were turning over in great field position and in the dying minutes of the first half the ball was passed through five lads before landing in the hands of a determined Dylan Gregory. Dylan looked to be stood up by the big Waterhead centre but he had other plans - turning his body and stretching out to the line he managed to place the ball over the whitewash and send us in at half time 22-6 up.

We have repeatedly discussed in training the lack of spreading the ball and communication during games so we asked the lads at half time to keep up the quick passing and the perfect defensive efforts - 20 mins away from a semi final we never dreamed we'd be in!

The second half began and the lads knew how close they were to those semi's and just refused to give up on them.

Oliver Wright had brought his kicking boots today and managed many long, powerful kicks downfield throughout, all chased by a hungry and well structured Judes' pack. We managed to hold Waterhead in their own half time and time again resulting in long kicks that were taken with ease from the air by Austin Daniel and returned at pace.

Following another early kick Judes found themselves in their own 10 for a rare moment. Elton Paplekaj scooted quickly to drive the ball up field and get us into better field position. Elton looked set to score only being stopped when a FIFTH attempt was made by a tiring Waterhead pack, his hand off is to die for!He jumped up quickly to keep the pace and played the ball to a waiting Keegan Mobey, quick thinking from the half back saw a flat ball to Mal who stormed over for his hatrick. Converted by Elton Paplekaj. 28-6

With just ten minutes to go Aaron Bolton crossed the line for our sixth try. Great support play throughout saw Aaron chasing behind any break and letting his team mates know he was ready and waiting. Mal had broke the line and was flying down toward the Waterhead full back. An ever- ready Aaron stayed on Malachi's shoulder and Mal flicked the ball out wide to him at the final moment leaving the full back with too much to do and seeing Aaron go over for a well-deserved try. Converted by Jake Hare 34-6

As Jake's kick went over the sticks the ref called that there was 4 minutes to go and Oliver Wright asked if he could try a short kick to fight for a final set of six. Communicating his plan with Austin Daniel, Oliver kicked high and short to the surprise of the Warriors and a perfect bounce back saw the ball fly straight into the safe hands of Austin Daniel. Just 20 metres out the lads spread the ball well once more and our little bullet Keegan Mobey hit the line before releasing a perfect pass out wide to Oliver Wright who went over in the corner - a well worked try that Oliver had most certainly earned from his outstanding performance today. The kick just going under to leave the final score at 38-6

The defensive efforts were most impressive today with Malick Niang, Jake Hare, Mal Price and Elton Paplekaj dominating in the middle of the field and our ever trusted wingers, Ryan Sweatman, Aron Fleming, Aaron Bolton and Freddie Winnard cleaning up outwide. Dylan Gregory put in some crunching tackles and Oliver Wadeson had his best game yet, holding his position and chasing down every loose ball.

Oliver Wright snatching top spot today, tackling hard time and time again throughout the game.

Hooker Tom Hill worked hard to keep the play speedy and precise and Oliver Wright made the game flow linking perfectly with Tom, Keegan and Austin on every single attack.

Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen wrapped up all who ran at him today and Sam Cunliffe also held well in a new position and got the job done when anyone ran his way.

The lads really worked hard to put the training drills on the field today with much more passing and less of the simple drives up field. With only one knock on we hope that this shows the lads just how good their passing skills are and builds their confidence to spread the ball around much more - Unfortunately, big powerful drives have seen the lads dominate teams for the last year so old habits die hard! Today was a great turning point in our player's development and we are so very proud of them.

We are now the ONLY Group B team still in this Cup and that is an achievement in itself! No matter what happens in the Semi's we got there and we did so in style! 7 tries and 5 different try scorers will do for us! Bring on the next round!

St Judes travelled to St Pats for this eagerly awaited derby, St Judes started well with Riyaz Khan scoring a belter of a try to open the scoring for Judes from the kick off. Pats hit straight back with a try of their own. Toby Hutchinson went on a great run to score a try to restore the lead back in Judes favour, Riyaz Khan carried the ball well to cross the try line once more.
Pats returned with another try. Judes continued with tries from Aaron Barker and Harry Wiswell followed by a good run from St Pats resulting in a try for them. Riyaz Khan was quick on his feet again to go over in the corner completing his hat trick. Again Pats followed with a try of their own, followed by another big run from Toby Hutchinson who went over the white wash for his second try.
A good first half for Judes with Aaron Barker and Toby Hutchinson working hard in defence.
H/T Judes 7/3
The second half saw Judes take control of the game with good defence and some excellent tries, Louis Baker powered his way over to score, followed by Ryley Flynn flying down the wing adding points on the Judes score line. Pats followed with a try, but Judes replied with another super try from Jayden Gaskell. Pats followed yet again with another try, Thomas Atherton carried the ball well crossing the line and winding himself in the process.
Pats scored their final try of the game, then Judes took more points with TRY time for Will Cobley.
Super footwork and determination from Oliver Williams took him to the try line to score his try.
Aaron Barker ran the ball in well to get his second try of the game.
The game ended with toby Hutchinson running the ball in well and crossing the line for his Hat Trick.
All in all a very pleasing result for St Judes with the score line finishing 15-6.
