St Judes were resounding 48-22 winners over Leyland Warriors in their Friday night away NWML Division 2 away game.
Starman, Ash Marshall set the tone for the game when he ran in for 2 early tries. But despite the strong start, the much improved Leyland side hit back and took a shock 16-10 lead. However it did prove to just be a wake up call for the Away side and the class and superior skill level of St Judes inevitably shone though and saw them take full control of the game to run out eventual 48-22 winners with further tries coming from Scott Robinson (2), Darryl King, Brett Taberner, Dec Parkinson, Aaron O’Donnell and a third for Ash Marshall .
Scott Robinson kicked 6 from 9 goals.
Outstanding for St Judes were Ash Marshall, Brett Taberner, James Ward, & Aaron O’Donnell.

Blackbrook 4 - 50 Judes

What a hot day for a game of rugby, as we travel to Blackbrook to play our Semi Final of the Lancashire Cup. Judes are immediately on the attack as Blackbrook knock on from the kick-off, but resilient defence from Blackbrook, as Junior crashes over, but is held up over the line. Both teams were patient and showed great defence and it was almost 10 minutes before Judes broke the Blackbrook line after a good kick over from Ben was knocked on , providing excellent field position for 1 drive from Harvey and then Reece Stanton, came steaming onto the ball to touch down and score our first points. Judes were now on the front foot and were gunning for points, with Junior breaking the line and Callum Silcock showing great support play to receive a good offload from Junior and shoot off under the sticks to score. Judes next set was under par with strange offloads and the ball going to ground, but Callum again created something out of nothing with a pin-point kick over which was collected by Reece and more fab support play on show from Junior Nsemba to score under the uprights. Blackbrook did manage to get some ball when the restart bounced over not 1 but 2 players to go dead for the drop out, but no way were Blackbrook breaking our line today and Judes overturned the ball to give us a final set this half. A good break from Ambrose set the platform for our last first half try, when Lewis Pinder scored an opportunist try with a good scoot from dummy half saw him go over close to the sticks. Conversions were taken by Callum Silcock who was 100% with the boot converting all 4 tries, to go in 24-0 at half time.

Luckily the heat wasn’t too detrimental to the boy’s performance and the more this game went on, the stronger they got. A cheeky tap through from Blackbrook saw an excellent pick up from Connor Hill our new lad, who built his career on the dark side……..football!!! Considering this lads new to the team, he did everything a winger should do, pinned his ears back and cut inside to go untouched to the try line to score his 1st Judes try, welcome to rugby league lad! Another marauding run by Reece saw us in a great attacking position and set us up nicely to spread the ball down the wing for the returning Alfie Whittle to jink in from fullback and dive over the line. Two great conversions from Callum Silcock from out wide, who was on fire with the boot today. Alfie’s brace came from a good darting run from Ryan and Alfie was on hand to take the ball in and score his second. Blackbrook restarted and the ball was collected by Theo Bishop who was prop turned winger today! He tucked the ball under his arm and we almost sang a rendition of “when I’m cleaning windows” as he waived away the on-coming defender over and over again and just kept motoring until he reached the whitewash to score a superb exhausting solo effort! Blackbrook restart and Judes make their first handling error of the game and knock-on gifting territory to the Blues, they were rewarded with what was a soft try really, as Judes momentarily switched off in defence and no markers, meant the Blues hooker could scoot for the line and touch down. Judes did have the final say of the game though and good work up field created space out wide for Reagan Sumner to get on the score-sheet in the dying seconds and sealed a comfortable victory that puts Judes through to the Lancashire Cup Final!

This is the second game for Judes this week and what a performance they saved for today, the coaches describing it as a “performance of a lifetime”. Our last few games have been played in the forwards, but our back row and half backs got more responsibility today and it showed, our 6 & 7 pairing was outstanding! This game had everything, awesome defence, second to none support play and superb kicking, which made us worthy finalists in the Lancashire Cup. Congratulations lads!

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort: Callum Silcock, this lad is a quiet character, but boy does he know how to control a game, had everything on show today, passing, running, defence and red hot with the boot.
Outstanding Effort: Ben Freeman, not the biggest on the pitch, but always up there in defence. Working well as the second half of our half back pairing and had hand in a few tries today.
Man of the Match: Lewis Pinder, winning back to back MOM’s, ran himself into the ground today, always creative on the pitch and like a brick wall in defence. Scored himself a cheeky try to.

The Golds travelled to Leigh Miners today for the semi final of the NWC Main Cup.
Being the only Group B team left in the cup and having only lost to Miners this year the kids were understandably nervous.
From the off the Miners kids hit hard and ran well and they maintained this effort throughout.
Classy and structured rugby is always expected from the Leigh lads and they didn't disappoint their coaches today.
Our boys seemed to have let nerves get the better of them from the off and the training drills went out of the window as a result. We reverted to one man rugby, hitting the props from hooker and expecting them to make all of the yards and this just simply doesn't work with teams like Leigh Miners. We needed to spread the ball more but we had a very lethargic and nervy line and our backs had stopped talking.
We tried in vain to break their line with an outstanding individual effort from Oliver Wright and huge drives from Mal Price and Elton Paplekaj but they were simply too good for us to break down today.
Had we spread the ball more and improved our line speed I think we could have given them the match that we did only a few week's ago at The Meadow but we didn't turn up and we allowed the occasion to get the best of us today.
Great defensive performances from Elton Paplekaj, Oliver Wright, Malachi Price and Thomas Hill stopped the Miners in their tracks on many occasions but, given far too much space to run, they were able to score an un-answered five tries.
Leigh Miners have played together for five years and played hundreds of games to perfect their plays, we have been together just 18 months with some new lads who joined us just this season.
We aspire to be like them but these things come with time and I believe, in time, we will be as good as them, if not even better.
These things dont happen over night but to be the only Wigan Squad getting to the Semi Finals is an achievement in itself.
We are so very proud of them and look forward to our next match.
Chins up lads, a semi final in your very first cup season is nothing to be sniffed at.
Keep moving forward xx

Under 9’s – MaroonsSunday, June 10, 2018
It was a lovely Sunday morning in WN3. The Xbox controllers and Ipads were down for a couple of hours and the kids were out in the fresh air and ready for today's big game. Todays opponents were Leigh East Lions so just a short trip up the East Lancs road for them or they could have gone on the B2537 which is a slightly shorter in miles for them. Anyway that's irrelevant as they were on time and ready for the 10 o'clock kick off unlike me who was 5 mins late. I was told it was a fast start for the Lions and they soon opened the scoring. Reuben Charnock then went through to equalise but it was chalked off. Then Leigh East playing some great rugby doubled their advantage. The early kick off wasn't only hurting the heads of parents with hangovers but the Maroons were half asleep too but then Ellis Corfield was on hand to half the scoreline.Belief was back with the Maroons and suddenly they woke up. A great tackle from Edwin and then by Jack Worthington stopped the Lions going forward. Then the Lions broke through and the number 6 restored their 2 try advantage. 3 1 after the first quarter.
A brighter start for the 2nd quarter and some fantastic metres were made by Edwin,Daniel and Lewis providing Reuben the wrecking ball to plough his way through the Lions defence to score a great try. 2 3. Zak was doing some fantastic tackles as well as Ethan and Grace and then a crunching tackle by Reuben resulted in a knock on and turn over for Judes. The tide was beginning to turn. A pass from Billy set try machine Ellis away for another one to equalise for Judes. 3-3.
Some great defence from Judes with Caitlin and Daniel putting their bodies on the line for the cause kept the Lions out but then some good play on the last tackle sent them over to take the lead again. 3 4. This was the half time score and Judes needed to claw their way back again.
The second half started well for Judes. Edwin, Daniel and then Joel making valuable metres to then offload to Ellis to equalise yet again for Judes.4-4. This team does not give up. Some great running by Caitlin and then Grace got Judes on the attack again and then Teddy who had been organising the team throughout with a great pass to Billy Whizz Baxter who went over the whitewash to put Judes in the lead for the first time. 5-4 The floss celebrations were not to last as the Lions went over to equalise themselves. A terrific run by Ethan and then Daniel put Ellis away yet again to make it 6-5 to Judes. Could they hang on? The lions attacked and on the last tackle were destined to score until Daniel came up with a try saving tackle and Judes hung on for the win.
Final score 6-5 Judes.

Pilkington Recs 6-14 St Judes

Judes travelled to Pilks where the sun was blazing down. The boys started off defending and won a turnover on our try line. Carter and Lenny both drove the ball forward and Jack pushed his way through the home side to take the try. George and Owen took their turn to make good ground. Layton headed for space in the corner to score. Judes defending was coordinated. Moving in as a line and tracking passes secured another turnover. Harvey and Owen both scored a tries. Max assisted in both moving the ball forward and controlling a loose ball.

After the break, Joel shot all the way down the wing to score. Joel and Harvey both scored their second tries from teamwork driving the ball forward. Our tackling was well executed leading to three turnovers and in one set the home side were denied any ground in 6 tackles.

Into the second-half Judes tried something new, with Carter acting as first receiver. This was a great success. The lads had Pilks caught out and had gaps to run through. Max positioned himself perfectly to receive a great pass from Lenny and dived over to score. Lenny, Jack and Sol put in good tackles. Carter fed the ball to Jack who ran the length of pitch to score. Two solid runs from both Lenny scored tries. Judes scored on every set and forced another 3 turnovers.

In the last quarter Joshua powered his way over the line to score. Layton and Joel put in a series of tackles so the home side hardly made any ground. On the next set, Layton and Joshua passed back and forth to cover good ground, Jamie cut in through their line and Harvey dived over in the corner. For the final try Layton and Jamie worked together passing the ball and Joshua took it over in the corner to score.

In a match full of magic moments, Lenny got the trophy for his pass setting up Max’s try. The coaches award when to Carter. The parents award was split between Max and Carter.
