Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st TeamSaturday, September 8, 2018
Young guns shine on a damp day in Yorkshire as once more St Judes poor away form struck again when they lost to a Drighlington, who new their fate with relegation was confirmed earlier. St Judes took a very young side over the Pennines, which can only be good for the future but the score of 24-12 to the hosts was hard to bare. In very poor conditions mistakes were a plenty as Jude’s went in 20-6 down at the turnaround but Jude’s second half performance was much better especially in defence and both teams only managed one score in the 2nd Half.

Today was a bad day at the office for Judes, as we played one of our closest rivals in our group. Halton were first to strike, as a chip over from Callum was swallowed up by their winger and side stepped our defence to go almost full length to score. The first time Judes put a passing move together, they scored from it when Alfie got a well-timed pass to exploit the gap and use his speed to leave the fullback in his wake and score.

Judes showed some good defence today, but conceded far too many penalties to Halton which repeatedly gifted them field position and after a double penalty in the set, our defensive line finally cracked and Halton drifted far quicker than we did and scored in the corner.

Second half Judes came out stronger in attack and good charges from our forwards, got Alfie in a position to score, but the Ref deemed he’d knocked on. Halton knocked on at the scrum and gave us the ball straight back, Ryan went over, but called held up although he did roll over and ground it. All our plays just didn’t go Judes way today and Halton were just more determined to win. Halton sealed the win by again exploiting our wing, fast hands to create the overlap and go over in the corner to add to their score with a 6 pointer, ending the game with a Halton win 14-4.

Disappointment for the lads today and a feeling that they aren’t used to. They just didn’t seem to get any momentum in the game, but credit to Halton they played well and wanted it more. I’d like to give a special mention to Josh Clarke today who isn’t the biggest of lads, but put his body on the line and made the outstanding tackle of the game to deny Halton adding a further try to their score. We’ll get back on that training pitch and come out fighting next game I’m sure!

Today's man of the match: Alfie Whittle, a lad with speed to burn, switching to fullback really suits him, as he can jink in the line exactly where he wants to and create some great attack. Tried everything he could today to turn our fortunes around, adding another try to his seasonally.

Chorley Panthers 12 V Wigan st Judes 14.

Today we played Chorley a team we haven’t played for a couple years, so were an unknown team.

The first half started with Chorley taking Judes by surprise and going over within the opening 5 mins. Judes having a couple of players out had shuffled the pack and it was to be seen how they were going to respond. Respond they did with going behind Judes kids caked in to life sending Layton Cottom over. Judes started to take the game to a stand fast defence but Judes defences were just as good! Little Callum Siddeley repeatedly took down a lad twice his size. Another Callum having the game of his season was Callum Davies. At the break Judes trailed by 2 at 6-4.

The second started like the first and Chorley had stretched their lead to 8 points it looked like it wasn’t going to be Judes day. That was until Judes stepped up and started to go through the gears, both props (Moe and Owen) took turns in running at Chorley which allowed Rohan to take control feeding passes to Kian and Layton before crossing himself. At 12-10 with minutes to go Judes where trapped in their own 20 and with repeat sets, Kian Stanton defended like a mad man making 4 tackles in a set of 6. Judes forced a turn over took the ball 80 yards up the field for Layton Cottom to go over on the last play of the game.
Judes had nicked it! 12 - 14

Well done boys a fantastic game of rugby today, coming from behind.

Lancashire Cup Quarter Finals Vs Leigh Miners (AWAY)

So, we joked that we would end up with Miners Away at the draw on Tuesday night then, like we’d tempted fate, out came our names! The old foe Leigh Miners, a group above us, the only team to beat us in the last two years and without doubt the best team at u12s in the North West.
So, the odds were stacked against us but after a 28 – nil slapping in our last meeting we just hoped to see progression and an improvement on our prior score.
The game started as it always does at Miners, hard hits, great hands and scary runs from our opposition. The first ten minutes were good for Judes however, conceding just one try and matching Miners in strength.
The middle section of the match was our downfall. As Miners went over for another two unanswered tries, instead of ‘digging in’ the lads allowed these tries to get their heads down and after a couple of 50/50 decisions went Miners way, our Golds really looked like they’d given up.
At half time it was 18 nil to the home side and as the second half kicked off our lads looked sluggish and ready for the full-time whistle. Two more very good Miners tries going over just caused our boys hearts to drop even further.
With just ten minutes to go we told the lads to really show Miners what we could do, we knew we had lost the game but wanted to go out with some team pride. From the kick off Malachi Price took the ball perfectly out of the air and drove it hard at the oncoming Miners line. Smashing through them he made it all the way to just ten metres out before the brave Miners Centre managed to haul the big guy to the floor. But this was the lift that the boys had been looking for and a quick play saw great hands from our lads. Jake Hare hitting Oliver Wright who whipped the ball out to Austin Daniel, Austin hit the line before a perfect offload to Aaron Bolton on the wing who dove over to bag a Judes try and snatch away Miners clean sheet.
The lads were thrilled to have finally made an impact and tails were up. The last ten minutes were played with pride and enthusiasm and after losing out to some questionable calls defended eleven tackles on their own line with grit and determination.
The game was certainly a game of two halves…well…two quarters…the last and the first but we improved on our previous score and scored a fantastic try through confident fast hands. Keeping Miners to five tries is something that many teams simply cannot do so we must pull positives from the defeat. We are not at their level yet, but we are reaching for it and intend on getting there.
Malachi Price was man-marked from the off today but still managed to cause serious damage teaming up with fellow prop Jake Hare to make the hard yards. Jake played his best attacking game to date and Oliver Wright was like a man possessed tackling all over the field.
Our line speed cost us today but some great individual defensive performances stood out in the form of Tom Hill, Oliver Wright, Austin Daniel and Elton Paplekaj. Elton causing havoc with his huge hits causing Miners to fumble the ball more than once. Tom Hill man marked Miners play maker today doing exactly as we’d asked of him.
Had the line moved up, many more tries could have been prevented but losses are a learning curve and without them we can’t grow. We will beat them one day, we just have to believe it from the start of the game!

Today Judes travelled to Salford for their 1st match in Group B
Knowing it was going to be an hard game the boys all turned up ready to do the job.
Judes started well going 2 tries to nil up in the 1st 10mins but a sleepy wing let the Salford team run in for their 1st .
Judes put up some great defence and showed true spirit on a couple of occasions by defending their line and keeping Salford out .
Unfortunately Salford got the upper hand put another 4 tries past the Judes team to which Judes had no response .
This was a very hard contested game back for Judes after only 2 proper training sessions back but they showed true team spirit on more than a couple of occasions.......
The win in the end went to Salford but the Judes team can be extremely proud of hard work today

West Bank 40 st judes golds 32

What a cracking first game back
Our judes lads took it straight to West Bank from the off with 3 un answered tries in the first quarter leaving it 12-0 to the golds

After a few subs we lost our shape in defence and West Bank came at us the way we had gone at them in the 1st quarter scoring 4 tries to our 1 in the 2nd quarter leaving us going in at half time drawing 16-16

3rd quarter it was like a clash of the titans with both teams going at it try for try with the this quarter ending with a draw 28-28

Last quarter we started well
But westbank scored first taking it to 8 tries to 7 we got a try back with great passing taking it to 8-8
There was 2 mins left of the game and our judes lads just switched off and let 2 soft try’s in to let westbank take the win 40-32
We were unlucky today not to get atleast a draw against a good westbank side but it wasn’t to be
We go again Tuesday night against pilks recs
