Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st Team

Saturday 7th April 2018

Wigan St Judes entertained Leigh East at the Meadow on Saturday knowing only a win was essential to keep them in the mix at the top, and after an early scare Jude’s finally ran out winners 24-14. Early exchanges were quite even with both defences giving nothing away Paul Pendlebury, Danny Clayton, Tom Owen, Danny Fallon right up there with a great attitude to defend and Olumide Oladele, Dave Fagan Luke Barrett and Gavin Rodden always carting the ball up with intent. But it was Leigh East who gradually worked their way up field and seemed to just have the upper hand when from a neat chip kick to the corner they managed to get the first score of the game. And right on half time Leigh East got over the line again to make the half time score 12-0 to the visitors. Jude’s made several substitutions ,Nathan Bevan, Gary McMahon, Luke Barrett all coming on and you could see the energy levels rise and as early as the first minute of the second half from a scrum on the right Ben Fisher found Winger Ashley Marshall wide out for him to score. Jude’s next was from young Gary McMahon whose neat grubber kick was pounced on for him to score under the posts, Ben Fisher slotted over the two. Another quick Jude’s attack was soon to come with Bevan, Fisher, Fenney and Gary McMahon dictating play and it was a Gary McMahons kick which set up great field position for David Fagan to crash over from close range and put Jude’s level at 14 all. Judes had really upped their game by now and on 62 mins out of nothing Man of the Match Nathan Bevan did what he does best, when from dummy half he went on a 40 mts break up the middle with defenders trying their best to stop him but his power and determination was just too much and he scored the game breaker right under the sticks, McMahon goaled to put Jude’s 20-14 up. Jude’s final try was on 70 mins when Daz Ball sent out a long pass to Winger Baz Rothwell who did the rest. Jude’s second half performance was encouraging scoring 5 unanswered tries but we cannot keep giving teams starts.

Chorley Panthers 12-16 St Judes

St Judes travelled to Chorley Panthers and came away victorious with a hard fought 16-12 win in their NWML Division 2 clash.
In tough wintery conditions and against very good and big set Chorley side, St Judes were pushed all the way in a fixture that would prove to be their toughest game to date and a character test that would see them tick all boxes.
Baz Gregson broke the deadlock 18 minutes in to the first half finishing well from one of his trademark bulldozing runs. However, Chorley soon bit back to level the scores to send the teams in at half time locked at 6-6.
Nathan Moore topped off another fine performance when his try put St Judes in front 6-12.
Adam Lavin then gave St Judes the upper hand when found himself on the end of clever John Astle kick through. 6-16.
The game then entered a nail biting last 10 minutes when Chorley scored to bring the score line agonisingly close, to 12-16.
But, despite a determined Chorley effort to win the game, St Judes held their nerve to hold out the home side and come away deserved 12-16 Winners.
In a superb all round team performance, the best for St Judes were Brett Taberner (NWML Man of the Match), Tom Hunter, & Nathan Moore.

Judes 8-38 Widnes Moorfield

A great start from Judes , excellent defence kept Moorfield to 0 and the game was really competitive.  But then the spark occurred and Judes scored a fantastic try , going through at least 10 pairs of hands and then going over through Jake. From that point on Judes switched off  and it was a struggle to defend as we were starved  of possession with mistakes and errors creeping into the game. Heavy pitch started to show on our lads who were paying a league above . They did not disgrace themselves in the slightest .

Wigan St Judes 22-10 Wigan St Cuthbert’s

Today's match down at the meadow was local derby matches that are full blooded and passionate games.

The first half was tense with both sides taking the game to each other. It was a while before the dead lock was broke with a deft little chip over to right hand side for Deecan Snape to touch it down. Shortly after Cuthbert’s broke the Judes strong defence. At the break there was just 2 points in it 4 - 6 to Cuthbert’s.

The second was just as tough but Judes were the more determined, with firstly Layton Cottam ripping through the Cuthbert’s defence then Kian Stanton. Judes had stretched the lead to 16 - 6, only for Judes to let Cuthbert’s score straight after the restart and at 16 - 10 the game could have gone either way. That was until Judes well worked play saw Max Jones crash over the line to seal the win for Judes and at the final whistle it was 22-10 for Judes.

Well done Judes! This win has been long overdue and has been coming.

RYLANDS TIGER SHARKS U12S 6 -30 WIGAN ST JUDES U12S GOLDS

The Golds travelled to Warrington to take on Rylands today. Another team we had never played before so an exciting away game to the unknown!

Losing the toss, the Golds started well with Oliver Wright kicking a huge, long opening kick down field. With a good chase the lads managed to pin Rylands in to their own half, quickly forcing an opposition knock on 25 metres out. From the scrum, Keegan Mobey found Big Mal Price who fought off four Rylands defenders, twisting and turning to break free and crash over the line. Kick sailing wide 0-4

More outstanding defence from the restart with Oliver once again providing an outstanding kick and the lads charging it down, putting the Ryland's lads under constant pressure. Great tackles from Aron Fleming, Ryan Sweatman, Tom Hill and Tyler Foster saw the Rylands attack struggling to make yards resulting once more in an early turn over on half way. A quick scoot and a powerful, devastating running from Elton Paplekaj saw another fast try for Judes 0-8.

The lads were full of enthusiasm and pride after a great start and another great kick from Oliver Wright saw the ball fumbled from the off by the Rylands' receiver. The lads wasted no time taking advantage of this close range turnover and charged straight at the line. This quick attack led to a panicked high tackle giving Judes a penalty just 10 metres out. Elton took the quick tap and crashed over for his second of the game on the very first run. Austin Daniel adding the two.

Toward the end of the half, lack of discipline had slipped in with both teams making sloppy tackles or panicked decisions, this was disappointing after such a great start to concede multiple penalties became frustrating but the lads did enough to keep out the opposition and went in at half time 0-14

At half time we talked to the lads about discipline and structure and urged them to get back to playing rugby rather than being drawn into arguing and sloppy play.

The second half started in the worst way it could have, great yards made by the Sharks and outstanding passing saw them quickly going over in the left corner almost straight away. A great kick made it 6-14.

This slip up confirmed our half time chat and really woke the kids up, they took this disappointment into the next set and from the kick off, a huge, powerful return from Mal Price got Judes into a dangerous field position straight away just 15 metres out. Austin spied his chance and weaved in and out of the defence in a way that only he can, finding the gap he slipped through to go over and recover the team from a shaky start. Aaron Bolton adding the two for Judes. 6-20

The Judes were back in business from this point, again they defended well with huge shots from Dylan Gregory, Elton Paplekaj, Mal Price and Malick Niang and great defence out wide from Freddie Winnard, Aaron Bolton, Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen and Aron Fleming all organised by the voice at the back, Austin Daniel. The Rylands attack were struggling to push forward and were eventually forced to kick long to create a bit of breathing space. Every kick today being perfectly managed by Keegan Mobey and Austin Daniel who communicated throughout to ensure no mistakes were made at the back.
With a tired Rylands pack chasing their kick, Mal Price ran onto the ball and took it the length of the field to score beneath the sticks. The safe foot of Dylan Gregory adding the extras 6-26.

Judes took the final spoils with fast, accurate passing from Keegan Mobey and Mal Price, the ball was fed to one of our newest recruits, Oliver Wadeson, who stormed down the wing to grab himself his very first try and the last of the match. 6-30

The forwards, Mal, Malick and Jake worked hard today making great yards and causing real trouble for the Rylands' defence and every one of the kids hit hard and accurately in defence, particularly Elton Paplekaj who put on an outstanding personal display - well done big lads! However, every single attack looked organised and dangerous today because of the backs with Keegan and Austin swallowing up every high ball with ease and with hooker Tom Hill and half back Oliver Wright pairing up and making great decisions, communicating well and being extremely vocal throughout.

Another truly inspirational TEAM performance with all the lads giving thier all for each other.

Well done Golds!

Pilks 24-20 Judes gold’s

Wow, what a game today against Pilks Recs!

First quarter was dominated by Judes. A pass from Jack Myers to Jack Hill to Tadgh saw Judes score their first try. After some great tackles by Deacon, Jack Elwick and a good run by Chiz, in came Cody with our second try. Chiz almost scored again, but just fell short of the line, followed swiftly by Deacon, who almost scored, keeping Pilks on their toes. Then came a pass from Tadgh to Jack M to Chiz to see in our third try. Judes managed to keep Pilks out this quarter with some great defensive work and cracking tackles from Aston, Harrison, Isaac and Jack Hill.

In the second quarter, some good handling skills from Pilks give them their first try of the match. Despite some tough tackles from Tadgh and Jack M, Pilks broke away and scored their second try, followed shortly by a third. Some good runs from Kian, Tadgh, Isaac, Archie, Jack Elwick, Leighton and Oscar but we just didn't manage to get over the try line. Pilks went on to score two more tries to end the first half of the game 20-12 to Pilks.

Third quarter saw a great run from Kyle get him to just short of the try line. A good run from Harrison saw him score Judes fourth try. Jack Hill and Harrison put in some great tackles to keep Pilks out. A fab run from Chiz gave Judes their fifth try. Aston was a tackling machine this quarter helping to keep Pilks at bay. This left the match at 20-20, going into the last quarter with all to play for.

The fourth quarter saw some great tackles from Isaac, Harrison and Kian as well as a stunning tackle from Deacon. However, Pilks managed to break away from the Judes defence to score their sixth try. Despite some great runs from Judes, Pilks managed to keep Judes out, ending the match 24-20 to Pilks.

Oldham st Anne’s v St Jude’s

We arrived at Oldham St Anne’s for our first sunny match of the season. Our Captain for the match was Sol, Lenny who has recently joined the team was playing his first rugby match.

We started strong and Layton broke through quickly to score our first try of the match. St Anne’s came back quickly and scored within their next set. St Judes organised themselves well, Joel provided some great defence holding St Anne’s behind the line then scoring two tries in quick succession.  St Anne’s broke through our defence and scored with a strong lone run from one of their players.  The first ten ended well, with a strong run from Jamie leaving St Judes a head.

Things settled within the second ten, both sides had some good runs but defensively both were held up and didn’t convert many sets into tries.  Max made some strong tackles and Connor broke through to score before the changeover.

The third set showed St Judes strength with them continuing to break through leading to a strong try from Harvey. Owen and Joel worked great together to hold the defence. With strong runs from Bobby and Sol leading to another try by Layton.

Going into the final quarter St Judes stayed strong with excellent defence from Lenny, Josh and Max. Runs from all players led to Carter braking through their defence to score. Our defence stayed strong with Jack helping to hold the line. Carters strong tackles led to a quick completion and a final try from Charlie.

Parents Award went to our new team member Lenny for a great first performance.
Best Moment went to Carter for an excellent tackle in the last quarter.
Coaches Award went to Bobby for great improvement, tackling and making some good runs almost scoring a try.
