Match Reports - 3rd & 4th June 2017

1st Team

The two week break wasn't a good thing for Judes as a well below par performance was nearly punished with a lively Leigh East  who were looking for a rare win and were in this game until the final quarter. The final score line of 26-8 was very flattering to Judes, but a win's a win as they say. The first half was a very tight affair with Leigh East getting plenty of field position due to Judes very poor discipline and the only go forward was from the boot of Rob Collier. Forwards Olumide Oladele, Paul Pendlebury, Tom Owen, Gavin Rodden and Nathan Bevan worked hard on the tough yards but Leigh East were well up for the game and with Jude's very generous with the penalties the 4-0 score line was probably a true reflection of the game. A small note on the first half was Judes had to defend 24 sets, 4 line drop outs, 2 Players held up over the line so only to be 4-0 down says a lot about Jude's defence. Jude's did start the second half better but it was Leigh who scored first ,of some indiscipline by Judes and Leigh now had a 8-0 lead. It was on 53 mins when Judes finally put it together when a swift attack with Collier,Rothwell and Pendlebury found Strong running Second Rower Gavin Rodden who scored wide out on the left. Minutes later Man of the Match Olumide Oladele crashed over from close range, Collier slotted over the two Jude's had took the lead and they were starting to click with their speedy attacks. Jude's next try was from a neat chip kick to winger Daz Ball who finished it off well. Leigh were starting to tier and Judes were growing in confidence, inter change forwards Luke Barrett, Kieron Gaskell.Tye Forde and Young Jason Holland did their bit when they they came on and centres Connor Parkinson and Adam Lavin along with Joey Brady And Nathan Jones were all eager to take the ball in and do the hard yards when needed. On 75 mins Baz Rothwell re gathered a loose pass from a rare Leigh attack to kick through and score a great try. Jude's final try was probably the best one when Baz Rothwell and Paul Pendlebury combined with some neat inter passing for Pendlebury to gratefully accept the try with a neat swan dive,Collier obliged with the boot and finished of 26 unanswered points in the second half. Jude's have 2 games in hand and this win was very important for the push up the league.

Man of the Match..Olumide Oladele

A Team

St Judes A Team travelled over Billinge hill for their local derby with St Helens side Bold Miners with a repeat of last years grand final where Judes took the spoils it was always going to be a tasty affair.

Judes started very well on a pitch with a slope longer than a life sentence and the early pressure was coming from the away side, but it was Bold Miners who scored first with ill discipline from Judes,

Judes went up the sloping field time and time again but Bold held on well and with another penalty they where down the pitch to score again to stretch their lead to 12-0 Judes had there chance and were held up short a few times but with a mistake and some slick passing Judes let another try in leaving the score 16-0 Bold were holding out for half time when Ash Marshall made a break but with the slope eating him up he was caught short of the line but it was the general veteran half back Dean Hunt who give Judes hope on the stroke of half time leaving the score 16-4 at the break.

Judes lads had a few words ringing round in their ears from half time but from the word go where on the ball with Dec Parkinson's twinkle toed effort got the Judes within 8 points 16-8, the game became an arm wrestle with the pack for Judes making life hard for the Saints with tired legs kicking in it was the flying wing man Ash Marshall who spied a rare chance on the small pitch to stretch his legs and race 60 metres to score a great solo effort Si Meehan added the extras 16-14, Bold went back to old school tactics late tackles and swinging arms but it was nothing the Judes couldn't handle with 4 minutes on the clock it was a grandstand finish up stepped MoM Barry Gregson to force his way through and open up them legs to race half length of the field Judes had done the unthinkable to break the saints hearts yet again Si Meehan rubbed salt into the gaping wound nicely stroking the ball between the up rights to seal the comeback. Bold through everything including the kitchen sink at Judes in the last few minutes but it wasn't good enough leaving the score Bold Miners 16 Wigan 20.

Special mention to Reece Matthews and Ryan Shaw on their debuts well done lads.

St Judes 6-32 Heysham

St Judes suffered a disappointing 32-6 defeat at home to Heysham Atoms in their NWC Premier Division clash.

A Kian Lawton try midway through second half was the only score St Judes would register themselves with the visitors running in 6 tries.

Best for St Judes In an usually lack lustre performance, were Jack Mills, George Witter & Ben Findlow

Leigh Miners  0-58 Judes

Judes put in a commanding performance from the off, although they did come away from our game plan slightly, it did still seem to work.  Reece was soon using his strength and carrying defenders over the line, but Miners held steadfast and didn’t allow him to ground the ball, which is no mean feat with Reece!  Miners did pin Judes back in the next set, but after a high kick, Reece came steaming through and plucked the ball out of the air, took the tackle and got a great off-load away, Junior Nsemba showing great support play was on hand to catch the ball and used his strength to drive over the line, scoring a superb try.  Judes were looking to score again after a good kick and chase forcing Miners to surrender possession, they would have been another 4 points to the good on the wing, only for the ref to deem it a forward pass.  Leigh then counter attack, but their kick thankfully runs dead and puts the ball back in Judes hands.  Judes put in a better set passing wise with the ball going through hands down the line to Alfie Whittle, who headed for the line and copped one for his trouble.  He didn’t let that deter him and almost crawled over the line combat style to score his first.  Judes really started to pull it together with some good set up plays and got the ball to Ryan Wood who showed great footwork to go in under the sticks.  Conversions by James Richardson & Callum Silcock.  Miners restart and their kick runs over the dead ball line forcing Judes to drop out and having to defend.  A great first half came to an end with both teams going toe to toe, but Judes coming away with the points 18-0.

Judes came out looking to build on the first half and were relentless in attack.  Quick hands created an overlap for Reagan Hunter to go over and record the first of the half.  Then from nowhere Callum Silcock set off on a sprawling run and backed himself to continue to the line and score a great individual effort.  Both teams traded knock-ons and a Judes scrum set up our next try when the ball was whipped out to Alfie Whittle who did what he does best and sped off to score under the sticks.  He was immediately racking up his hatrick, when Miners chose to kick to him on the restart and you can’t allow Alfie to get up a head of steam without being punished at the other end.  Reece Stanton was also rewarded for is hard work in the match, when a Miners intercept went to ground and Judes scooped up the ball and played on, forcing it out to Reece who used his long stride to score one handed.  Miners still tried everything they knew to get the ball back and put in a good short kick-off, which was taken superbly by Aaron under tremendous pressure.  This allowed Lewis Pinder, who’d showed great control in the game, to set himself up with a massive dummy to break through and score a well deserved try and a great finish to the game.  Conversions  were taken by James Richardson who put in some top draw kicks today and his huge contribution to the 58-0 scoreline.

Another dominant performance from Judes, that didn’t always stick to our structure, but got the job done!  Some great individual touches today from everyone as well as the try scorers.  Not sure the week off did us any favours, but can’t argue with that score-line and Judes always love to prevent their opposition going over, so well done lads!!

Today’s Awards go to:

Outstanding Effort: Kian Barry, was in the starting 13 and rewarded his coaches with a good performance, showing great tackling and good hands down the line.

Outstanding Effort: Leon McIntosh, has been playing really well the past month, even switching positions and still putting in strong performances.

Man of the Match: Lewis Pinder, always up there with a top performance.  One of our stand-out players at hooker, got a lot of flack today, but made sure we got the right result in the end.

Wigan St Judes 10-44 Clockface Miners

Today at the meadow our opponents were Clockface.

With a team which saw some players out of position due to team members missing, Clock quickly took control of the match streaking into a 18 point lead! That was until Freddie Boylan crossed for Judes (converted by Alex Birch). The boys played some good rugby which lead to Cody Newton going over the try line but at the break it was Clock with the advantage with the score 10-22.

The second half saw us unable to cross the Clock line, this wasn't down to lack of effort from the boys. They all stood up to the mark and played with pride and this was especially shown by the work effort put in by Callum Siddeley. Unfortunately the game ended 10-44.

The score was no reflection of the hard work and effort on display from the lads.

Awards this week:-

Man of the Match - Lewis Banks

Parents Player of the Match - Callum Siddeley

Coaches Award - Cody Newton

Effort and Achievement - Josh Mawdesley

Under 11’s - Golds

Saddleworth Rangers Under 11s: 18-44    Wigan St Judes Golds Under 11s:

The Golds were extremely excited to be going on their very first coach trip. The lads were off to Saddleworth and spent the hours drive laughing, singing and giving all the parents a headache!

The Rangers won the toss and opted to receive, Keegan Mobey's long kick was chased down well by The Golds who managed to retain The Rangers in their own half for the full set of six, forcing the turn over on half way. Judes drove the ball forward and on the third run hooker Freddie Winnard hit quick thinking scrum half Keegan Mobey who sold the dummy and stepped through the gap that it created, scoring to the right of the sticks. The kick sailing just to the right of the sticks 0-4

Another good defensive set saw The Golds attacking again quickly, a storming run from big Malachi Price looked certain to add more points but The Rangers managed to track back and stop the big man. Malachi jumped up for a quick play and The Rangers marker panicked and pushed him back to the floor gaining The Golds a penalty. Jake Hare stepping up and powering over to the left on the very first run, converted by Austin Daniel 0-10

Saddleworth hit back with a quick try from the restart, a lovely grubber through from their half back saw The Golds caught in their own in-goal area, panic saw a Gold's knock on and the Saddleworth fullback dove down onto our mistake. Converted with ease 6-10

The Golds quickly recovered from this lapse in concentration and took the final points of the half with a quick scoot from Daniel Nanyn, running down the wing to score in the corner with Dylan Gregory adding the two.

Half Time score: 6-16 to The Golds.

The Rangers kicked off the second half and Judes stood still and watched the ball roll into touch! Judes quickly recovered however and produced a wonderful defensive set to stop Saddleworth from going over and forcing a knock on. A hard drive from Malachi Price saw The Golds in great field position, Austin Daniel took the next drive and knocked the Rangers defender off his feet to score over the top of him, Elton Paplekaj adding the extras 6-22

The ever resilient Rangers hit back with a quick try through the middle as the Judes pack seemed to fall to sleep! Converted, 12-22

After an amazing personal defensive display throughout , huge forward Malachi Price decided it was his turn for a bit of the glory. Scoring two back to back full lengthers in less than five minutes. One of which coming from a new move created in training by full back Austin Daniel and perfectly executed by Keegan Mobey, Freddie Winnard and finished by the big guy. Malachi converting one himself  (The Golds finding this hilarious as the running joke in training is that Big Mal cant kick!) and the other kick going just under. Ten huge points from Mal taking the score to 12-32

Judes had found their stride now and it wasn't long before they were on the attack again. Austin Daniel's fast feet confused The Rangers enough to allow him to burst through the line with none of the Saddleworth kids able to match his speed he glided in under the sticks for his second and Judes seventh, winger Aron Fleming adding the extras 12-38

With five minutes to go, both teams managed to bag a last minute try. The Gold's started with a fantastic dummy and scoot from hooker Freddie Winnard. Freddie weaved in and out of a desperate Saddleworth defence and worked his way from 40 yards out all the way to the white wash to dive down under the sticks for Judes final try of the game, converting it himself 12-44

Saddleworth never gave up and they came back at us quickly from the restart with their outstanding half back chipping a fantastic kick over a very tired Judes line and scoring a well deserved final try.

Final Score: 18-44 to The Golds

Our two brand new players, Sam Cunliffe and Tyler Foster playing not only their debut games for Judes but also their first ever competitive rugby matches. Neither looking out of place and both contributing some great tackling and running throughout.

Again, Austin Daniel and Keegan Mobey ran good lines all day, controlling play well. Recognised by the Saddleworth coach with Keegan taking Opponents player. Well done to The Bullet!

But today forwards Malachi Price and Elton Paplekaj stood head and shoulders above the rest, with huge hits and great marker play, forcing multiple knock ons from the sheer force of their tackling. Both boys sharing Coaches M.O.M,  Malachi just snatching Top Tackler from Elton (With just one tackle between them!) and the Parents giving their certificate to Mal too. A great day for our big boys.

Under 8’s - Golds

Wigan st judes golds 52-28 portico

On what began as a sombre day down at the meadow following recent attacks our boys stood in arms side by side to show great strength and support during a minutes silence.

In usual golds style it took 10 mins for the boys to wake up and weigh up the opposition but once they did they showed great determination, with strong defence coming from Jack Myers, Harrison Oakes, Tadgh Casey and the signature big hits from Jack Elwick. The boys showed some great skill passing today which is really coming on in each game, some brilliant offloads from Jack Hill saw Mason Chisnall go over for 5 tries but once again it was a run from Gabe Mills that had all the parents excited seeing him go nearly full length of the pitch to score. All the boys played fantastic today showing real strong team spirit
