1st TeamSaturday, June 30, 2018
St Jude’s hit the half century for the second time this season with a 56-26 win against Hull Dockers at the Meadow. In blistering hot conditions St Jude’s scored 10 tries, some of which were good to watch.Young Gary McMahon was once again heavily involved with boot and ball in hand and rightfully took the NCL Man of the Match award.Danny Fallon was also on fire with the boot slotting over 8 conversions from all over the park. Jude’s Forwards Baz Gregson, Nathan Bevan, Danny Clayton, Luke Barrett, Dave Fagan, Danny Fallon and Leon Harber were all well up for this with Pay Back on their minds, as earlier in the season Hull stole the game on Humberside . A Daz Ball try started the scoring for Jude’s on 5 mins, debutant James Ward 2 tries his second needed some scoring, Baz Rothwell 2 tries, Leon Harber 2 tries, Baz Gregson 1 try, Connor Parkinson 1 try and to complete Jude’s scoring a cracking Joey Brady try wide out when winger James Ward broke down the right and from the play the ball swift hands to the left edge saw Brady go in for a great try.

Man of the Match..NCL Gary McMahon….another mature performance.

Top Tacklers….Danny Fallon 21…Dave Fagan 20…Luke Barrett 20

Culcheth Eagles 10 - St Judes 36

Try Scorers: 1st half James Molyneux, Lewis Banks, Rohan Green.

Try scorers: 2nd half James Molyneux, Josh Mawdesley, Lewis Banks (2)

Conversions: Lewis Banks 1, Rohan Green 3

Half time 4-18

Todays game was a strange one with all the twoing and froing of when and where the game would be played, adding into the mix that Culcheth only having 10 available players made for a lot of rearranging and players playing out of position. The lads really coped very well with the rolling system of subs and although we were aware that at times the play was a little disjointed this allowed them to have a well earned breather and also allow game time for all the players.

The tries scored were a great display of link up play and individual skill and the lads kept their cool in the face of some challenging situations from some of the opposition players.

As discussed in the team talk each player deserved credit today for the way they adapted. Also special mention to Owen Dewhurst who drew 4 players to him allowing Rohan to weave his way through and provide a great timed pass to Lewis to score. This is what we want to see more off.

Welcome back to Callum Davies and special mention to Owen and Jack who are getting better each game.

Well done lads.

Wigan St Judes Golds 36 Rylands Tiger Sharks 6
The Golds welcomed Rylands down today for our second meeting of the season. We knew they were a big side with good hands and had prepared for big hits and fast play.
With Oliver Wright, Malick Niang and Freddie Winnard out injured and Sam Cunliffe unavailable we knew that the lads had their work cut out for them with some players having to change positions to fill in for our missing lads.
The game started in the worst possible way for Judes, a long kick off under the beaming sun saw an early knock on just 10 metres from our line. One drive from the scrum was all it took to see the visitors take a very early lead.
This early soft try really rattled our lads and changed their attitudes for the rest of the game. It was the only try they allowed for 40 minutes in the beaming sunshine and no coach can ask more than that!
Today was a day for our big men. The Rylands pack were screaming for Big Mal Price to drive one in almost taunting him on to the ball, it was clear from the off that they had prepared for the big guy but, as many teams have realised this season, it is one thing planning to tackle him, it’s quite another executing this plan. His strength and speed was simply too much for the Rylands pack and he stormed through the middle to open the Judes scoring. Keegan Mobey converting and levelling up after an awful start.
Again, the kids began to banter between themselves, a call of ‘They’ve only got Malachi’ really getting under the skin of Elton Paplekaj who screamed for the first drive in the following set. Like Mal, he smashed through the line, fending off two determined Ryland’s defenders and going over under the sticks to prove he was just as worthy as our biggest prop Mal. Converted by Austin Daniel.
A repeat of the first two tries followed next with both Malachi Leo Price and Elton Paplekaj adding another try each scoring a full lengther a piece. The big boys were running with fierce determination and would have been hard to stop by any side today. Both converted, one by Dylan Gregory and one by John Tierney. Taking us in to half time 24 – 6 up.
We started the second half well with Austin Daniel putting in some outstanding kicks in the absence of Oliver Wright we were managing to pin Rylands in to their own half for almost every set then our backs were managing to cover the long kicks on the last and return them well.
Mal was just on top form today. For three matches we have asked the big guy to stay off the ball and just defend – not easy for a 12 year old to accept, he has had just four runs in our last three matches but he wasn’t playing defender today. He was screaming for every ball and scored another two quick tries. One a full lengther and the other collecting a high Austin bomb on the fifth and managing to convert it into points like a pro.
Austin Daniel was then injured after a little foul play, incensed, he decided to tap and run the penalty himself. One huge drive (worthy of our forwards!) was all it took for our wonder full back to go over in the corner. Kick just sailing wide.
Our final try was through great Judes hands, which we have seen more and more of lately, four fast passes before an inside ball to the man of the hour, Mal Price who went over for the last try of the game (and his FIFTH!) Converted by fellow forward, Jake Hare.
A wonderful defensive line was key today and one of our newest recruits, John Tierney, was all over the field. John is not the biggest of players but a huge heart and dogged determination often makes up for size and he made tackle after tackle refusing to let anyone down his wing. Mal Price, Elton Paplekaj and Tom Hill all putting on huge shots and Oliver Wadeson, Aron Fleming and Austin Daniel both also getting massive counts on the stats sheet.
It was great to see Austin and Aaron Bolton controlling our attacks and linking perfectly with hooker Tom Hill. Ryan Sweatman, Dylan Gregory, Malaki ‘Paddy’ Cullen and Tyler Foster all also putting in shots and keeping the line strong today.
Proud coaches and parents – We were almost melting watching you! Well done lads!

Wigan St Judes U7’s V Cadishead. Venue St Judes.
On a sizzling hot Sunday morning St Judes welcomed Cadishead and put in a good performance. Judes started brightly with Harry Wiswell scoring a quickfire try for Judes, after good footwork from Meallan ward and Will Cobley, who took up us the field with fantastic runs. Cadishead replied with a try of their own in the corner. Some good defence kept the visitors at bay with Toby Hutchinson and Liam Wood putting in a couple of big hits, Harry Wiswell crossed the line for his second try to finish the first quarter.
In the second quarter with the temperature hitting 27 degrees, Judes ran in three unanswered tries, one from Billy Whizz Riyaz Khan then with great footwork from Aaron Barker he led Thomas Atherton to dance his way over for a try, followed by the hard working Jake Critchley barnstorming over for his try. The visitors ended the second quarter with a try of their own.
In the 3rd quarter Judes stepped up their defence with some great hits by Louis Baker, Jake Critchley and Meallan Ward. This lead the way for Meallan Ward to cross the white wash, followed by Harry Wiswell who completed his hatrick. George Stewart ran the full length of the field with his fast feet scoring a fantastic try, which ended the 3rd quarter.
The last quarter was a slow running affair, with Jake Critchley and Riyaz Khan both scoring fantastic tries, with only a single reply from Cadishead, this was understandable as the heat was creeping up.
All in all, a great performance from Judes who continue to improve week after week. Today their defence was a joy to watch. Well done boys.
