Match Reports - 1st & 2nd July 2017

1st Team

A glance at the table before this match would have told you a close encounter was set to ensue. Instead Judes always looked in control of this game even after Askams early onslaughts. This was one of Jude's best performances and most recent in a string of substantial improvements. But the manner of this performance was nothing short of delightful and went some way to vindicating the process Martin Cunningham, Peter Thomas and Martin Riley are currently going through with this side. After Askams first attack opener Judes quickly hit back with their first attack with a sweeping backline play were Bevan, Collier and Fenney found Gavin Rodden who put in a sweet little grubber kick for winger Baz Rothwell to score wide out , Man of the Match Rob Collier slotted over from the touch line. Jude's forwards carted the Ball forward with a presence, and Tom Owen , Oly Oladele, Paul Pendlebury, Gavin Rodden, Dave Fagan , and Luke Barrett always eager to do their bit on Defence as well. Jude's next try was a carbon copy of the previous week game when Gavin Rodden broke free on the left edge with Winger Joey Brady supporting who created the space for Gavin Rodden to finish it off wide out with a great try , once again the boot of Collier added the two. With halftime approaching the home side levelled the scores with a somewhat lucky kick for a try. So the game went into the second half level at 14-14 and the home side having the momentum in their favour, but loose pass by Askam was intercepted by the ever dangerous Gavin Rodden who quickly burst clear to score by the posts,Rob Collier goaled 20-14 to the Jude's. Full Back Nathan Jones was safe at the back and was always dangerous with ball in hand and on many occasions was really tested by the home side and Askam did have their moments but with Jude's line speed restricting their go forward Jude's always had the upper hand in this game and the hunger to win was clearly on show by the Judes.  St Jude's final try was a cracker when the ball was kept alive brilliantly by Collier and Fenney before Connor Parkinson hit the winger Ashley Marshall who wasn't going to be stopped for a touchdown in the corner to seal this great win 24-14. After this Jude's will certainly fear no one in their run in for promotion. The Maroon and Gold Wall held firm in the second half keeping a clean sheet, a massive pat on the back lads not many teams will do that at Askam.

Judes  34-10  Waterhead Warriors

A tough encounter today for the league decider with a couple of games left in the bank!  A hard fought match that was battled out up the middle.

Judes started off with a spill of the ball, but good defensive pressure turned the ball back over and great yards chewed up by Alfie set the platform for Harvey Makin to score one of his signature tries, converted by Callum Silcock, really calmed the nerves.  Judes build again and a good kick on the last by Callum for Alfie to chase, but it took a wicked bounce into touch.  Waterhead are awarded the scrum and great to see a contested scrum and Judes pushing to regain possession.  Reece Stanton was the first to react and scooped up the ball and while Waterhead were wondering what was going on, he shot off to the line to score.  Good defence from Judes really contained Waterhead, but after a penalty awarded for Judes offside, our opponents had 6 tackles close to our line and they wiped the ball out to the wing, to create the overlap and score a converted try.  Some great drives up field from our forwards today really set the platform for Lewis Pinder to create a special try after spying a gap and just going for it to score in the corner.  Waterhead were really trying to slow our attack down and we were finally awarded a penalty for holding and fast hands down the line put the ball in our speedsters hands, Alfie Whittle, who still had work to do to score, but was determined to get over and handed off the opposition to get the ball down in the corner.  Good defensive pressure from both sides ended the half 18-6, but still felt this game could go either way.

Judes started the second half badly and awarded back to back penalties to march Waterhead up field, thankfully they knock-on before scoring any points.  Alfie came in the middle to try and create himself some space to add to his tally, unfortunately copped a high shot for his trouble, but did get us the penalty.  A strong run from our captain Kalan, set Reece Stanton up who scored a superb individual effort, showing strength and determination to break the defence and take the opposition with him on his back over the line to score a brilliant 4 points.  A mistake from Judes gifted Waterhead their next 4 points when they took advantage of a spilled ball, when Judes switched off expecting the ref to call the knock-on, but Waterhead just kept it alive and ended up over the line to record their second.  Judes put in a short kick off and Reece came steaming at the Waterhead player and just takes the ball off him one on one and set off to the line.  This set up nicely for Richard Nsemba to come crashing onto an inside ball to score at the side of the posts.    Tries were now coming thick and fast and the restart kick was taken by Lewis Pinder who showed great speed and backed himself to outrun his opposites to score a superb long range try.  Judes were hungry to finish with more points and Harvey was over the line again close to the final whistle, but unfortunately was deemed a double movement.  Conversions were taken second half by James Richardson and finished a strong game 34-10.

A good win for the boys today saw them deservedly securing leaders of the u13s premiership division, putting in a solid effort in both defence and attack today against a robust Waterhead team.  We couldn’t be any prouder of these lads and they really deserve all the accolades they receive for their sheer determination and attitude in playing rugby league…..that’s why we're champions!

Blackbrook 52-6 Wigan St Judes

Today we were away at Blackbrook,

The first half wasn't very favourable for the Judes team as they were bossed around in all departments. Blackbrook had the run of the field and after the first ten minutes it showed with the score at 18  - 0. The team managed to stem the flow and with Lewis Banks touching down for Judes (converted by Alex Birch) was the only respite for them.

The second was more of the same as the first. Some of the decisions didn't go Judes way, which added to the team's woes. At the final whistle and the score at 52 - 6, the team were at a low.

The thing to take out of being on a low that the only way is up.

Even some super league teams go through bad periods to regain their momentum.

So heads up Judes.

Judes golds 28-28 Leigh east lions

A wet summer's night down at St. Jude's saw us play our toughest opponents this season so far Leigh East Lions.

Captain for the match was Oscar making his debut for the team.

St. Jude's started with a strong run from Harrison Oaks who passed across to Mason Chisnall and out to Jack Myers who crossed the line and showed Leigh we was up for the game!. Leigh couldn't answer back and Jude's lined up with a strong defence. The next set saw us pushing forward and up stepped Jack Myers with try no 2. Some great tackles from Archie, Oscar and Jack Elwick couldn't stop Leigh going over the score was 2-1. St. Jude's lined up for the last set of the quarter strong runs moved the line forward and Mason Chisnall went over making the score 3-1 and Jude's looked on fire.

The 2nd quarter started with some hard runs at the defensive line from

Leigh with Jude's holding strong. Jude's next set saw Harrison oaks do the full length and Leigh just couldn't keep up with his lightning pace. Leigh responded with a slick try cutting through a gap. Jude's held a great defensive line some superb talking by Jack Elwick and Oscar Roper. Then came Harrison Oaks who for the 2nd time put his foot on the accelerator and went  across the full length of the pitch.

The 3rd quarter saw an explosive start from St Jude's with Some great ball

Movement from the lads and Mason Chisnall was sent down the wing and over the line. Leigh was waking up and they answered back with a try and they was coming Hard at are line but some great tackles by Archie and Aston helped the defence stay strong keeping them out. Jude's responded the best way we know with some hard runs from Tadgh, Gabe and Isac. We couldn't break the line and Leigh used there set to show some set plays and went over to bring an end to the quarter 6-5.

Leigh started the 4th quarter with a storming run to score. 6-6 and all to play for both teams were bringing their A game! Archie made a powerful run followed in by Oscar but Leigh was strong and held us out. A hard and fierce set was ran by Leigh some big hard tackles was had and both teams was In it to win it. Leigh managed to break the defence and score going 7-6 up for the first time in the game. Jude's weren't taking this lying down one last hard set was had and over went Jack Elwick to bring the game to a close 7-7.

Gold's 48-16 Chester

Chester Gladiators were the visitors today down at judes to face our under8s gold's.

Chester turned up with only 5 players who were very inexperienced so in true gold's spirit all our lads volunteered to take turns to go on Chester's side to make a game of it.

It wasn't a classic by any means and Chester only scored their four tries through our own players.

Judes went on to win 48-16 with Tadgh Casey the stand out performer.
