Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st Team

Saturday 17th March 2018

As the Beast from the East battered the Meadow Wigan St Jude’s started their home campaign entertaining Yorkshire side Stanningley in arctic conditions, were players were complaining about the bitter cold winds but thankfully despite the weather making the game difficult to watch let alone play in St Jude’s ran out 36-18 winners. St Jude’s opened the scoring on 3 mins with Jude’s first attack when Sponsors Man of the Match Danny Fallon pounced on a loose ball under the sticks to score, Ben Fisher goaled. The next 25 mins was littered with mistakes by both teams but it was Stanningley who took the lead with two tries in quick succession. The final 5 mins of the first half Jude’s struck back with Luke Barrett crashing in under the posts, Fisher added the two and right on half time winger Ben Jones squeezed in wide out to give Jude’s a 16-8 lead. The second half Jude’s were playing into the bitterly cold wind once again the conditions stopping open flowing rugby, Luke Barrett, Danny Fallon, Ben Fisher, Olumide Oladele and Man of the Match Gavin Rodden working hard to get Jude’s going. Joey Brady got in wide out to give Jude’s a 20-8 lead and mins later Scott Robinson scored on the left. Mid-way through the second half Gavin Rodden stamped his class with two strong breaks with one he managed to score wide out. The final mins Connor Parkinson got over, again wide out, and strong running centre Scott Robinson got his second to complete the scoring for St Jude’s.

St Judes 28-0 Leyland Warriors

An outstanding man of the match performance Mark Whittaker inspired St Judes to a 28-0 win over Leyland Warriors in their Season opening NWML division 2 clash.

Despite the difficult wintery conditions, St Judes were always in control of this game, dominant in both attack and defence.

Daryl King opened the scoring for St Judes with little under 10 minutes on the clock, and whilst the determined Leyland side refused lie down, ultimately the superior skill factor of the St Judes side would prove too much, and the difference for their gutsy opponents.

Further tries came from Mark Whittaker, a second for Daryl King, Baz Gregson, and Callum O’Conner.

Rob Collier was in great form with boot, converting 4 out of 5 goals.

Best for St Judes were Mark Whittaker, Daryl King, Baz Gregson, and Curtis Berry.

Under 9’s – Gold’s

St Judes U9’s Gold’s 24-32 Shevington

The Mini Beast from the East couldn’t stop U9’s gold’s opening game against Shevington Sharks! With the wind, snow and Icy temperatures Judes U9’s Gold’s played their gold hearts out!! However with a defeat our spirits were not frozen!

The game was a thriller from beginning to end – with great defence from both sides

Cody Smith, Tadgh Casey gaining yard after yard, big Jack knocking them down like bowling pins as he ran at them full steam ahead!  Jack Myers showing off his tackling skills bring them down one by one if they managed to slip his hands then Deacon Charnock was there to bring them down and if they managed to slip his hands then Tadgh Casey was there to finish them off!!  Oscar Roper with his ducking and diving skills managed to escape Shevington defence and score 2 tries!!  Then came the awesome passing skills – Isaac to Kian to Harrison = TRY!!

Shevington came back with some great hard runs but Judes defence was keeping them out – Aston, Kyle, Isaac, Oscar, Harrison, Jack M, Cody, Deacon (who was everywhere you turned), Kian, Big Jack, Leighton making his debut for Gold’s ran hard and fast gaining yards all had their defence hats on – Shevington couldn’t break through.  THEN Shevington mustard up strength and managed to score a few tries – Now it was try for try.

Tadgh Casey was on Fire – he was everywhere – Tackling, gaining yards, scoring 3 tries!! However Shevington had the advantage and scored again and again resulting in a defeat for Gold’s 32 – 24!! What an awesome game it was!

Can’t not mention our fallen hero’s today – Mason Chisnall, Archie Unsworth, Jack Hill, Gabe Mills all missing due to injury and illness.

Man of the Match – Tadgh Casey

Opposition MOM – Tadgh Casey

Parents Award – Tadgh Casey

Top Tackler – Deacon Charnock

Thank you to all parents for braving the Baltic weather!!
