Wigan St Judes ARLFC – Match Reports

1st TeamSaturday, June 16, 2018
It was brutal at times, but top half of the table clashes are always like that when Wigan St Jude’s travelled to Cumbrians Askam on Saturday, but alas Jude’s came away with nothing for their heroic efforts losing 12-4. In a game were defences we’re on top tries we’re hard to come by Jude’s pack were brutal at times with Danny Fallon, Danny Clayton and Dave Fagan all hitting over 30 tackles and Oly Oladele, Leon Harber, Dec Parkinson, Paul Pendlebury, Tom Owen, Daz Ball and Luke Barrett carting the Ball Forward with a presence. Gary McMahon was impressive with the boot throughout the first half always keeping Askam on their toes. Jude’s were unlucky on two occasions late in the first half when Leon Harber followed by Luke Barrett were both held up over the Askam’s try line. St Jude’s with a huge appetite for possession in attack we’re so unlucky not to score when Gary McMahons precise and devious kicking just failed in the 39 min when a cruel ricochet bounced up to the Askam’s centre who raced away, Judes Great scrambling defence caught him but a quick play the ball saw them go in by the posts for the opening score right on the stroke of half time. The second half began with a controversial incident as Gavin Roddens weaving run to centre field were he found Tom Owen with a hit and spin pass for Tom to score but the Touch judge ruled a Forward pass. Jude’s had the momentum and mins later a swift attack on the left saw centre Connor Parkinson score wide out and at 6-4 to the hosts Jude’s were still in this Tough game. St Jude’s were invigorated but it was Askam who struck back on the hour with a try to go 12-4 up. Cruel injuries late on made Jude’s reshuffle the side but take nothing away from Jude’s the desire was still there throughout but once again the away win eluded St Jude’s.

NCL Man of the Match…Leon Harber…Took the ball up with power and pace.
Top Meters….Dec Parkinson…..125…Great performance.
Top Tackler….Danny Fallon…35…another solid game.

St Judes were 26-18 winners over a stubborn Chorley Panthers side in their NWML Division 2 Clash.
St Judes took control from virtually the first kick off the game and quickly raced into a 10-0 lead with tries from Ben Jones & Aaron O’Donnell.
Hiwever, despite St Judes dominating much of the play, Chorley took advantage of some dubious decisions to take a shock 12-18 lead into the break.
In the second half St Judes were soon back in front and back in control of the game with further tries Aaron Smith, Ben Taberner, and second for Ben Jones.
Final score St Judes 26-18 Chorley.
Outstanding for St Judes were man of the Match Aaron O’Donnell, Brett Taberner, and Tom Gallagher.

Portico 48 Wigan St Judes 4

The boys had trained well all week. We were looking forward to putting a few wrongs, right. The first half was brilliant, great intensity and ball play. Great skill on show. Judes we’re forcing mistakes and working for each other. We scored a great try through quick hands from Jake to Kyle who blasted over on the left edge. We were well and truly in the game at half time, but losing 12-4. From the kick off of the second half , we seemed to be under the kosh. And from then it was an uphill battle (not just pitch wise). We let Portico use the hill after we didn’t and they scored 36 unanswered points. A tough one to take after a great improvement on discipline. Onwards and upwards to next week.

Tries - Kyle
Awards- captains choice - Liam Ryding
Parents choice - Jake Liptrot
Man of the Match - Leon Trafford

Halton are our league visitors today, for a top of the table clash down at the meadow. Judes came out attacking Halton’s line and a chip over was fielded well by the Hornets, but a massive hit by Junior, dislodged he ball near the line and it was pounced on by Eliot Peposhi to record a nice early score for us. Both teams went toe to toe in the middle section and Halton did well snuffing out Judes attack and not allowing them to get the ball out wide. Hornets put some great high kicks in, but every one was dealt with superbly by our new lad Connor, can see all that goal-keeping training has paid off! Halton got the rub of the green when Judes were pulled for lying on and it gave them the position needed to swing the ball out wide to score. Thankfully the conversion was a tough one and missed. Judes stuck at it defensively and we finally got a relieving penalty for a ball steel close to Hornets line, 2-3 of our forwards bombarded their way to the line, but resilient defence wouldn’t let them ground it, until our big lad Junior Nsemba was having none of it and made sure that ball was going down over the line. Conversions taken successfully by our Mr Dependable with the boot Callum Silcock, saw the first half come to a close 12-4.

There was everything to play for second half and Judes needed to step up and take control of the game. A delicate chip over from Ben saw the ball come to a stop in the in-goal, the Hornets player had all on to run it out and great work from our defence trapped him in goal. Working back up field, Harvey Makin got the ball in his hands and weaved from side to side, he could smell that try line and he found the perfect gap to dive over and score. At 18-4 the momentum was swinging Judes way and they really showed some solid defence this half and managed to contain Halton in their own half and a few occasions. Off the back of good defence comes try scoring opportunities and a long pass out to Reagan Sumner saw him dive over, unfortunately the Ref disallowed for a forward pass. It wasn’t long before Reagan had his second opportunity, a pin-point kick from Callum went over the head of the winger and bounced perfectly in the in-goal for Reagan to put a great chase in and got to the ball to touchdown in the corner. Halton were awarded a penalty early in the next set and although they didn’t find touch, showed enough good defence to not allow us to capitalise. Their persistence paid off, when they worked their way up field and a smart chip over evaded our defence and Hornets recorded the next points. A superb restart from Callum saw Hornets knock-on and gifted us the ball in their half, a couple of drives and hot hands from Harvey to McKenzie Davies who was on hand to score under the sticks. Conversions by Callum Silcock, put Judes 28-8 up. Halton responded with a short kick off and it couldn’t have fallen better, hitting the 10m powder and bouncing back to Halton hands. That lucky bounce gave them the opportunity to offload down the line and after our two lads clashed heads and went down injured, gave them the gap to score the final try of the game. Another good restart from Callum runs dead, giving us the ball back from the drop out, unfortunately the clock runs out before we can record any more points and ends a challenging game and well-earned 28-12 Judes win.

Great result against our closest rivals today. Hard to repeat the magnificence of last week’s showing, but a top performance with a good score-line, giving Judes the win they deserved, especially for our rugby Dads, Grandads and Coaches…..HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

We’d also like to take this opportunity to give a Special Thank You to Steve & Wendy of Cynergy Security, our team sponsors. They’ve not only supplied our new playing kit this season, but have also purchased tracksuits for each of the lads. Their generosity is overwhelming and is very much appreciated by the team. The lads look extremely professional now, both on and off the field. We can’t thank you enough, from the team, coaches and all the parents :-D x

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort: Eliot Peposhi, has had outstanding performances this past month and always delivers on the pitch in any position he is asked to play.

Wigan St Judes 16 v Westbank Bears 18

The boys were in their first semi final today and with St Pats awaiting the winners in the Final.

The started well in the first half with Muhammad Abssai powering over the line and it looked that Judes could be on for the win. Westbank had other ideas about that and stunned Judes with a quick reply of a brace of tries. Judes boys got themselves back into the game with playing good rugby which saw Scott Finney go in before the break. Will the scoreline at 10 - 12 the second would be cracker!

Judes playing open rugby cracked open the Westbank defence on a number of occacions, with overlaps not being used or the final pass going to ground. Westbank extended their lead with a try against the flow. The boys not dropping their work rate paid off when James Molyneux went in under the sticks, unfortunately time was not on their side as it ended 16 -18.

Well Done for coming so far in the composition and with other compositions we will ended up in a Final.

Awards this week :-

Man of the Match - Josh Mawsdley

Parents Man of the Match - Muhammad Abassi

Coaches Award - Scott Finney

Effort and Achievement - Jack Doran.

Today Judes hosted Crossfields at the Meadow in what was always gonna be a tough match .
Judes last played Crossfields away right at the start of the season and that was an end to end game .
Judes kicked off and brought the ball straight back up the field . Some great drives and ball handling on show straight from the off .
Crossfields were up for this match though and took the ball back at Judes throwing it through hands and making Judes work hard in defence.
The match continued in this manner throughout and both teams played some great rugby .
Judes got a roll on with the scoring which was unanswered throughout. Crossfields had chances but either errors or some great determination in defence kept them out .
This game didn't let anyone down and was proper end to end stuff from 2 teams playing great rugby .
Both teams can hold their heads up high after an entertaining game .

Golborne Pirates 28 vs Wigan st judes golds 20

Sunday 17th June - Father’s Day! And to be honest a game of rugby league that excels any Father’s Day treat! With a few players missing due to injury and holidays the golds were down to 11 available.
With Kyle as captain, Jude’s won the toss to start the game, from the onset Jude’s made some excellent yards with great runs from Cody and big Jack. Early game jitters results in Golborne possession after four tackles. Golborne ran hard but we’re met with the ever awesome brick wall defence we’ve become accustomed to! With some solid tackling from Cody, Deacon, Aston and Harrison. However, with a great sidestep, Golborne no 7 broke the Jude’s defensive line to put the pirates 4-0 up.
From the restart, Jude’s we’re fired up and with excellent first drives from Issac, Oscar and Harrison, Jude’s made good yards - training definitely paying off with some outstanding handling skills on display from Aston, Tadgh, Jack Myers and Oscar. Resulting in Harrison levelling the score at 4-4 with a strong break.
On the restart Jack Myers as usual outstanding in defence, with 2 tackles in a row and a defensive line moving up quickly, forcing a mistake from the pirates, excellent runs from Big Jack and Harrison.
The first half set the scene for what was turning out to be a great game with both sides defending well and running hard.
With the pirates taking the lead 8-4 Jude’s answered back with a strong drive from Cody to go over in the corner to tie the game for a second time at 8-8
With some awesome handling from Jack Myers, big Jack broke the pirates defence to give Jude’s the lead 12-8
The remaining minutes were ended with a great run from Kian, Tadgh and Oscar. But another Golborne break means the first half ends all square at 12-12
The second half was played in the same competitive spirit, solid running from Oscar, Deacon, and Kian (who thought he was a prop for a minute, picking the largest lad on the field to run at!!) The game was end to end, awesome defence from Tadgh, Harrison, big Jack, Aston and Jack Myers. Results in Harrison making a fantastic break to give Jude’s the lead 16-12. The pirates relied with 2 tries 16-20, before Deacon showed great pace and footwork to level the score again at 20-20 - a great solo effort.
Golborne ran in 2 tries in succession to give them a 28-20 lead but with Kian (playing at full back for the first time) making 2 try saving tackles and Deacon stopping the pirates at the death. The game ended at 28-20 to the Pirates.

In summary, a great game of junior rugby league played in a fantastic sporting spirit, involving 2 outstanding teams playing well above their age.
Many thanks to both sets of parents for attending and Golbornes referee, whom, in my opinion did an outstanding job, running the game fairly with great sportsmanship.

The golds awards went to:

Top Tackler- Deacon

Wigan St Judes v Hindley
Venue: St Judes
Wigan St Judes entertained Hindley at home this week and started brightly with quick feet from Jayden Gaskell to open the scoring. Judes then put in some great defence to keep out the big pack of Hindley and were rewarded with a great try from the strong running Jake Critchley. Hindley then replied with a try but Judes hit back with another great try from Jake Critchley. A super try from Will Cobley extended the lead further to end the first quarter.
2nd quarter started with a total team change for Judes, but nothing changed for Judes who continued to repel anything Hindley threw at them with outstanding defences from George Stuart, Oliver Williams and Louis Baker. Oliver Williams slid over the try line after using his fancy footwork to drive himself to the whitewash. Then the ever-improving Ryley Flynn and Harry Wiswell both crossed the try line, with great tries.
The 3rd quarter proved to be our best conceding no tries and scoring 3 of our own from George Stuart who pushed off some great defence to run the ball in for a try, followed by Liam Wood running hard and bagging himself 2 consecutive tries. This gave Judes a big advantage.
The last quarter did not dissapoint either, this time Aaron Barker, Will Cobley and Harry Wiswell carrying on the great defence, Will Cobley with 3 try saving tackles. A 2nd fancy footwork try for Jayden Gaskell followed by Ryley Flynn powering his legs to the try line finished the scoring in this comprehensive win for St Judes who continue to go from strength to strength, a Final word for the coach Lee Wood and Team Manager Emma Hutchinson who managed the game time brilliantly with the number of players we had.

Final Score: Wigan St Judes: 44 Hindley 16
