Bury Broncos 34-14 Wigan St Judes

A trip to Bury brought us to a tough ground that was very heavy. The boys were up for the game and good to go. We started well and completed our first 3 sets. Our line speed was up and so much better than previous weeks , we were the better team. Unforeseen things occur and the boys conceded a couple of tries. But credit to them they came up the hill and scored through Jordan and Jake. Both fantastic tries and well worked.
HT 20-10
Second half we had the slope to our advantage, but struggled to get any sort of hold on the game. All in all, line speed was brilliant , completion was brilliant , we just couldn’t make it count. Everything is there boys , just keep at it!

Judes  46-6 Rylands

Judes take on Rylands today and were dominant from the starting whistle.  On only our second set we were over courtesy of a good build up down field for Reece Stanton to go crashing on the ball and score, conversion from Callum Silcock, 6-0.  Judes keep the pressure on in the next set and decent ball through hands goes to Ben who did a lovely timed offload to Alfie Whittle who sped off and side-stepped the full back brilliantly to score.  Judes wanted to score every set, but tried a kick through on the last, unfortunately just running dead.  Rylands kick over deep and a great leap and catch by Ryan Wood who rolled back the clock, puffed his cheeks out and took them on down the line, going the full length of the pitch untouched to score a brilliant solo effort and haven’t we seen Ryan do that many times over the years!  Judes knock-on at the restart, but are so determined to get the ball back in hand that they push at the scrum and turnover the possession.  Judes build down the other end, but opt for the power play on the last and Rylands defence held strong and stop us in-front of the sticks.  Judes contain Rylands defensively to get a decent position for the attacking set, but our final kick is just a little too strong.  Rylands have an attacking set, but surrender possession and Judes capitalise with hard yards from Ambrose then ball out to Junior Nsemba who went on a barnstorming run, to crash over and score, those new boots definitely worked today!  Conversion was good from Callum Silcock.  Judes weren’t finished just yet this half and more champagne rugby played with a great team try with Alfie having 2 touches of the ball in the set, giving an unselfish offload to Ryan Wood, who ran a good line to go over for his second of the game.  Rylands try a short kick off which doesn’t come off for them, so Judes get the ball back, but time just gets away from them, winning the first half with 24 unanswered points.

Judes came out second half with the same passion.   Great work from our forwards again who ran hard all match, to give Alfie Whittle the space he needs to peruse his territory and pick exactly where he wanted to get over that whitewash to score his second.  The tries came thick & fast this half, as Rylands were starved of the ball and Judes were relentlessly scoring every set.  Great feet from Reagan Sumner, who totally wrong footed his opposite to get over the line.  Reagan was soon over for his brace, with a try that looked all day to be covered, but somehow kept weaving and squeezed in swan like in the corner super league style!  Next points came from a brilliant initial drive from Junior, who kept driving his legs and got a sneaky off-load away to Lewis Pinder who had open space to score under the sticks.  I’ve seen some conversions in my time, but Junior thought he would test his new boots out in front of the sticks, unfortunately, his boots were football boots not rugby! Haha.  Judes were unrelenting in attack and chewed up ground with every play, Logan went sniffing and put in a cheeky off-load to Reagan who again showed dazzling footwork to secure his hatrick.  Conversion taken successfully this time by Lewis Pinder to put Judes clear at 46 points to nil.

You couldn’t blame Judes for taking their foot off the gas a little with such a high scoring game, but we need to make sure defensively we hold onto that clear score-sheet, but Rylands had other ideas and had their best period of the game right at the end when good attacking pressure paid off when they crashed over under the sticks and managed to squeeze the ball down with our defenders all round him.  Judes restarted and a great kick off by Callum which went over the back line to award us the drop out, but the ball kicked didn’t go the 10 and after Judes reclaimed were caught off-side and Rylands were in the driving seat, but surrender possession and Alfie spied his opportunity to bag his hatrick racing down the line, unluckily his foot touched the side-line and denied his third.  Rylands get some momentum and after a drop-out, penalty for offside, Judes knocking ball forward and a failed intercept, gave Rylands their second chance, massive defence on show though from Judes and Rylands just couldn’t penetrate our line for more points before the final whistle goes with a convincing Judes win 46-6.

Fantastic team display today with superb attacking flair and great tries scored.  Judes played some champagne rugby and were in control from start to finish.  Great performances across the board, good yards from our middles, including Kenzie and Reece, 2 great tries from Ryan and an impressive contribution from Logan off the bench.  Well done lads, keep up the hard work!

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort:       Ben Freeman, assisted in a few tries today and put in a big defensive display.  Junior Nsemba, every ball he took up he churned up at least 20 metres, got on the score-board himself and set one up for Lewis.

Man of the Match:         Reagan Sumner, having an outstanding season this lad, scored a hatrick today, with a try that super-league would have been proud of!

West Bank Bears 12-22 Wigan St Judes

Today's opposition was a team that we have not played since the team was under 8's.

Judes started straight from the kick off, when Kian Stanton collected the ball on the twenty and went 80 yards to touch it down! Judes didn't seem to be firing on all cylinders and couldn't complete a set, which West Bank took advantage of and broke on the wing to level the score. Late into the 1st half Judes got it together, which saw an improving Deecan Snape go over. At the break Judes were leading 6 - 10.

The second half saw Judes play some good rugby but just couldn't turn it into points that was before Layton Cottom latched on to a well-timed pass to break the Bears line. Unfortunately Judes switched off for a second when restarting allowing the Bears to go through the Judes centre.   At 16 - 12 the game was on a knife edge, Judes regrouped and started to test the Bears.  Judes put the ball through hands and reaped the rewards with Kian Stanton rounding the winger and going in under the sticks. Bears weren't finished and mounted attacks on the Judes defence, however our defence stood fast to win the game 12 - 22.

WIGAN ST JUDES U12S GOLDS 42-12  WATERHEAD WARRIORS

A late one down at The Meadow for the Golds today against Waterhead Warriors, a team flying high in our group, who, like us, were yet to lose a league game.

The game started off with both teams getting a feel for each other, hitting hard in defence and struggling to make yards when attacking. A credit to both team's coaches for an outstanding defensive display.

After a solid ten minutes, Judes took advantage when awarded a penalty 30 metres out from interference at the ruck. A quick tap and one hard drive saw Malachi Leo Price over the line, breaking the deadlock in Judes favour. Austin Daniel adding the extras 6-0

This opening try seemed to light a fire under the Golds and, with superb kicking from Oliver Wright, they put in fast and structured chases, pinning in the Waterhead attack and forcing early, long kicks that were all collected and returned perfectly by an ever-ready Austin Daniel at the back. Within minutes of our opening try, a great defensive set forced a long kick up field. Collecting it, Austin hit Mal Price who took a storming run at the Waterhead line and split them down the middle, going the full length of the field to score under the sticks. Oliver Wright adding the two 12-0

The lads were on a roll after the second try and with Oliver Wright finding touch from an unbelievable kick off, we had the ball back in hand straight away. Hooker, Tom Hill, moved the ball quickly from the scrum into the hands of big prop, Jake Hare. Jake powered through the defence to grab his first of the season. Kicked by Elton Paplekaj 18-0

Tempers boiled over just five minutes before half time seeing forward Mal Price and a Waterhead second rower be sent to the bin for a five minute cool down. Mal is always a loss in defence just through his sheer strength, big hits and determination but the Golds showed once more that not only the big lads can get the job done and with outstanding efforts from Tyler Foster, Ryan Sweatman, Oliver Wright and Aaron Bolton we managed to keep The Warriors out for the closing minutes of the half. In the final play, Malick Niang, Jake Hare and Elton Paplekaj powered the ball up field and a quick scoot from Tom Hill saw him looking certain to score but getting held up over the line on the fourth! Full back Austin took charge and ran at the line once more before releasing a great pass to Dylan Gregory who ran a fantastic inside line to get over the white wash for Judes fourth try. Dylan adding the two points himself. Ending the half with Judes in the driving seat with 24 unanswered points. 24-0

As twelve year olds can tend to do, our boys came out in the second half with an air of arrogance, thinking that the game was already won and totally underestimating their extremely skilled opponents. With sloppy takes from two kick offs and silly, avoidable mistakes from our boys, within five minutes, Waterhead had hit back with two well-worked and converted tries. The Golds were shocked at such an impressive start from the travelling side and realised quickly that their attitudes needed to change! 24-12

However, the boys managed to get out of their slump and good drives from Sam Cunliffe, Oliver Wright, Aron Fleming and Aaron Bolton got us back into great field position. With hooker Tom Hill off the field with an injury, Big Jake Hare put himself behind the play ball and managed a very quick scoot over the line for his second of the match! 30-12

The game ended with another two Judes tries. Mal Price sealing his hatrick with an unstoppable run from 40 out and Keegan Mobey grabbing his first of the season with quick hands from Tom Hill spreading the ball out wide, Keegan throwing his trademark dummy and creating just enough of a gap to squeeze through and get over the whitewash. Both tries converted by Aaron Bolton and Freddie Winnard.

Final Score: 42-12.

After an outstanding performance mid-week against A Group, Leigh Miners, we were hoping for another hard hitting performance and we weren't left disappointed! Although discipline was tested at times and complacency got the best of us for a sloppy 5 minutes, overall, another great team performance from the lads. The wings were solid with Aron Fleming, Oliver Wadeson and Freddie Winnard stopping anything that came their way and Aaron Bolton and Tyler Foster cleaning up on their side too.

We had great tackle counts from Dylan Gregory, Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen, Ryan Sweatman and Oliver Wright not forgetting the huge hits from Mal Price, Jake Hare, Elton Paplekaj and Malick Niang throughout the game too. Our backs on form again with great link up play constructed by Austin Daniel, Tom Hill and Keegan Mobey and a fantastic first game back from lightening legs, Sam Cunliffe. Everyone playing their part today against our toughest opponents yet from this group.

Seven tries, 4 different try scorers and 7 different kickers, all converting! Well done the boys!

Sunday 15th April 2018

Well where we start 3 players down . 1 on holiday and 2 sicknesses so we turned up at Portico with 11 players who all knew they had to put a shift in today .
Right from the off Judes were in control with a solid defensive set. Next set saw Judes cross the line for the 1st try .

Judes forwards were far too strong for the Portico side and run at them constantly . Judes defence was strong forcing Portico to play 1 up rugby on many occasions. Portico kept coming at Judes and using their forwards well making great yards which lead to a try to Portico late in the 1st half .
Judes came back with vigour and made sure their line wasn't crossed again . Penalty after penalty on Judes own line for being offside was defended well keeping Portico out for 3 strong sets .
Eventually Judes started running in more and more as the Portico defence tired but in all fairness to Portico they never gave in and tried until the final whistle.
