Cadishead 42 v  26  Wigan St Judes

Today the lads went to Cadishead with depleted numbers.  Before we knew it, we were 12-0 down and we hadn't even touched the ball.  The lads managed to get the ball back and Liam raced 90m to score to raise the team.  Before we knew it we were in again with Jordan racing 80m to score after a good set up drive from Morgan. Field position was exchanged and there was a score for both teams before half time, ours came from good play from Jake down the short side, with an offload to Declan who crashed over.

Half time 18-16

We started strong in the second half and took the lead through another distance effort from Liam.  But we started to tire and fitness and lack of replacements started to show.  We made some good efforts in attack, but didn't slow them down in defence, too many metres were made that got us on the back foot.  Liam scored another try to complete his hat trick, but it was in vain as Cadishead finished the stronger team.  We know where we're going wrong, its just a case of working on it for the next few weeks and building from there.

Judes  50  v  Hindley  0

Judes welcome Hindley down to the meadow for what was a comfortable win in the end.  Strong opening yards from Reece and Harvey who offloaded to Callum Silcock to score our first try within a minute of the whistle, with Callum converting his own try, put us 6 points to the good.  Hindley tried to counter and after regathering their short kick off and Judes being caught offside, were attacking our line, but resilient defence from Judes deny Hindley.  Judes were really strong defensively today sniffing out every turnover and looking to score with every ball in hand and they turned up the heat and were scoring off every set.  First from Harvey’s signature move, crashing onto the ball and using his speed and strength to bound over the line.  A great break from Reece, sets the platform for our third try from Reagan Sumner, who regathered an attempted intercept and eluded the on-coming tackle to tiptoe his way to the corner and ground for his first.  The next four came in rapid succession, as a massive push in the scrum, turned the ball back to Judes and Reece “the beast” Stanton, steam-rolled his way to the line and just swatted away the defence, nothing was stopping him getting over that line!  Our fifth try came from Harvey Makin’s second who just used his sheer strength to barge his way over the line, carrying defenders with him.  On the next set, it was Ambrose Kibula’s turn, who finished off a good passing moving down the line to increase our score to 34.  Hindley produced some great restarts in the game and for the second time turnover the kick off, as it just about made 10 and went over the sideline, but Judes still stood firm and didn’t allow any points from Hindley, instead marched their way to the other end, got the ball out to Reagan Sumner who had just enough room to squeeze in at the corner on the stroke of half time.  Some difficult conversions taken exceptionally by Callum Silcock, meant Judes lead 38-0 at half time.

With Judes firmly in control of this match, it was important to them that they kept the score-sheet clean.  Although still outstanding in defence second half, their attack wasn’t quite as slick, so didn’t match the same number of tries as the first half.  We did score early doors though when Ambrose Kibula took the ball up and for all the world looked covered, but somehow broke through to score his second.  Judes play then became a bit scrappy, trying offloads and kicks that just weren’t on, until Callum made an awesome break down the middle, but landed himself time on the sideline, with a bang on the head.  Judes did spark back into action and a deep kick was caught and returned superbly by Ryan.  Then on his return to the pitch, another fantastic break by Callum set up Judes final try of the day, the ball going out to Ryan Wood, who showed elusive footwork to jink his way to the try line under the sticks, giving our Man of the Match, Callum Silcock, the final 2 points of the game, who had definitely turned up with his super speedy kicking boots on today and finished an illustrious win by 50 unanswered points.

Another great performance today from the lads, although much slicker in the first half, but when you’re so many points to the good, it provides the opportunity to try new things.  Well done boys and keep up the hard work!

Today awards to:

Outstanding Effort: Eliot Peposhi, was forced into a different role last minute, but handled it superbly and guided Judes around the park.
Outstanding Effort: Kalan Devine, our captain fantastic, who was back to his best and made at least 15-20 yards with every ball he carried up.
Man of the Match: Callum Silcock, was our clear man of the match today, did everything in this game, ran hard, assisted, scored a try and was immaculate with his kicking.

Orrell St James 18 v Wigan St Judes 16

Today we made the short trip to Orrell,

The games against OSJ have always been good games, in the first half Judes were soon under the cosh as OSJ came at us from the get go and they soon were ahead.  Shortly after they had stretched the lead even further, that was until Judes re-grouped and with Kian Stanton starting to grow in the half back role he started to organise Judes attack.  This soon started to pay off with Max Jones going over, Judes looked the better team and at the break they were only a try behind.

The second half saw Judes dominating their hosts until OSJ broke down the wing, with covering tacklers Alex Birch, Scott Finney and James Molyneux convinced they had put the player in touch, however with an unsighted referee their pleas fell on deaf ears and the try was awarded.  Judes then applied even more pressure on OSJ's and OSJ couldn't get out of their own half for the last 10 minutes.  Layton Cottam who had troubled OSJ all game put his own stamp on the game by the going over the line. With a great kick off from Rohan Green and Deecan Snape recovering the ball, Judes were again on the attack with Layton Cottam going over again - only to have his try chalked off by the Ref who for some reason gave a 20 metre restart to OSJ!  Soon Judes had the ball and it was Kian Stanton to get on the score sheet.   At 18 - 16 and 2 minutes on the clock left this could have been Judes game, especially as OSJ knocked on, however this was missed by the ref and 2 tackles later he blew the final whistle!

This was a game that Judes shouldn't have lost as they played really good rugby and were on top for most of the game.

Under 12’s - Gold’s
WIGAN ST JUDES U12S GOLD 28 ASHTON BEARS U12S 12

The Golds welcomed Ashton Bears down to The Meadow today and we were in for a chilly one! We knew that Ashton were a fantastic defensive team and knew that our attack would have to be full force to break their line today.

We made a lot of mistakes in the first half which was really frustrating after a fantastic training session the day before. The kids were falling off tackles and didn't really seem awake. Ashton pushed us all the way in the opening five minutes but we just managed to keep them at bay. We found ourselves on the attack once more and with great drives from Mal Price and Malick Niang we found good field position, Elton Paplekaj made no hesitation and jumped behind the ball, scooting and powering through the Ashton defence. Tyler Foster stepping up to add the extras. First blood to Judes! 6-0.

Again we continued to fall off tackles and stand still, Ashton took advantage of this and were level before we knew it! 6-6 The lads just couldn't wake up!

Oliver Wright collected the ball with ease from the Ashton restart and quick play from Dylan Gregory, Austin Daniel and Tom Hill put Ashton on the back foot. The fast play opened up their defensive line and panicked tackling saw the gaps begin to show. Malachi Price wasted no time in taking advantage of the space in front of him and went over under the sticks from around 40 metres out. Dylan Gregory adding the two 12-6

Again we fell off tackles from the restart and with us losing out on a couple of 50/50 calls, Ashton were challenging our line once more. Showing great hands they spread the ball out wide and again levelled the scores! The match going to halftime at 12-12.

We told the lads at half time that we were disappointed by the lack of skill on display. They show so much flair and fluency in training that it's frustrating when they don't bring it out on match days. We asked them for much more effort in the second half, particularly in defence.

Although we weren't at our very best, the second half was a much better defensive performance. We managed to keep Ashton out for the entire half and cross their line three times ourselves.

Big Mal Price bagging himself two more tries to complete hatrick, one from a great flat ball from Austin Daniel and the other another a quick scoot for such a big guy to dive down under the sticks. These tries converted by Oliver Wright and Austin Daniel 24-12.

With just a few minutes left to play, Elton spied his chance for his second try and, with a quick scoot away from his marker he picked up his speed, pushing through the tough Bears defence he crashed over just right of the sticks. The kick sailing just wide. Making the final score 28-12

Not our best by a long way but still some positives to take from the game. Oliver Wright's kicking was fantastic as always and the lads made some huge, perfectly-executed tackles to win us back possession. Mal Price taking lads in to touch and Elton and Austin hitting the man just under the ball to unsettle the carry and force the knock on. Some great infield kicking from Austin saw Aaron Bolton and Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen just metres from the line out on the wing and Sam Cunliffe stepped up to fill an injured Keegan's boots at the back and did a fine job of it too! Tyler Foster took a hard knock during the game but had tackled consistently well before it, pairing up with Aron Fleming to make their wing unstoppable and Oliver Wadeson and Ryan Sweatman doing the same on the other side, assisting Freddie Winnard who again did all that he had to do on the left. Big Jake Hare continues to grow in strength and ran hard today alongside Mal Price and Malick Niang and Tom Hill listened to our critiques at half time and took them into the second half with a much more fluent exit from the ruck and accurate, sharp passing throughout. Dylan Gregory and Aaron Bolton ran good lines and drew the line extremely well going forward. Austin Daniel left the field disappointed with his performance as he is always the most critical of himself but we were extremely happy with his organisation and returns and thinks he needs to give himself a break sometimes! He does his job better than any junior fullback we know...Even on a tough day!

When you're not at your best and everything seems to be going against you then self evaluation is the key and these lads are very good at spotting and correcting their own mistakes. Not many teams will hold Ashton to a scoreless half this season and the lads took on our half time critiques and managed to better themselves for the second half show. We like to get more than two names on the try sheet but today we just couldn't seem to piece things together the same as we usually can. Lucky for us, when all else fails we have the sheer strength of Elton and Mal to push us through. Throughout one of our poorest games, one lad stuck out the most and that was Elton Paplekaj. He was all over the field in both defence and attack, he walked from the field out of breath and with his shirt stuck to him! A true warrior today!

Lots to work on at training tomorrow but to keep a great team like Ashton Bears at bay the lads should be very proud.

Under 11’s
Today travelled to Waterhead and boy was it chilly!!
1st off let me apologise for leaving the kit at home (bad bad bad coach) I had everything else if that helps
Judes kicked off and showed great skill to get the ball back from the kick off . Some great ball skill and drives got judes near the line but not over it .
Waterhead came at Judes but they were to strong in defence and soon got the ball back in Judes possession.
This carried on throughout the game end to end but Judes were just to strong . Waterhead forwards took the ball hard and strong towards the Judes defence on numerous occasions and in the most Judes handled them well .
Some sloppy defence and tackling errors let Waterhead cross the Judes line twice but on the whole Judes made it their game straight from the start .

Under 9’s – Maroons
It was a lovely Spring morning and the Maroons were ready for another battle, this time against Golborne Parkside. It was an 11.30 kick off and so the first battle of the day was trying to find a parking space anywhere near to the ground. After getting a taxi from my car we were ready for the match.  Looking at the opposition warming up, I thought 3 or 4 of their coaches were getting into the spirit of things and warming the kids up with the full strip on. Unfortunately for us, they then appeared in their starting line up! Captain for the day Edwin started off proceedings but it was a fast start for Golborne and the first try was on the board. Some heroic defending by Grace and Daniel stopped them increasing their score further. Brave Daniel injuring his finger in the process and unfortunately he had to go off. A couple more Golborne tries but then Maroons started to get into their groove. Some great yards made by Zak and Edwin pushed Judes forward and then some fantastic moving of the ball by Teddy and Billy released Ellis to go over for Maroons first try. Great teamwork. No flossing this week, Maroons meant business. Golborne piled forward but some great tackling by Caitlin, Ethan and new boy Joel kept the score down. Every one of the team putting their bodies and often faces (Grace) on  the line for the cause. A couple more scores by Golborne but Maroons heads did not go down, some more great running from Zak and Edwin moved the ball to Lewis and a fantastic pass by Teddy sent Ellis through again for his 2nd try of the match. Great play Judes. Then some great tackling by Lennon, Shamus and Billy eventually leading to a few Golborne mistakes and turn over of the ball.  A great second half performance from Judes and then came the moment of the match, some great yards were made and on the last tackle Teddy threw a dummy pass span through about 3 of their players and went over the whitewash, that was worth the entry fee alone, well the hefty prices at the bar anyway.  A great final part of the game for Judes going forward and again bodies being put on the line in defence. A much improved display.  Final score Judes Maroons 3 Golborne 12.
MOM Edwin. Trophy winners Grace and Teddy.

Under 9’s - Gold’s
Blackbrook u9s 24 vs st judes golds 20

We travelled to brook today who haven’t lost a game so far this season so we knew it was going to be a tough game for the judes golds boys

1st quarter
Captain of the day was jack Myers who played the role a treat bossed it from the start .
Golds defended first but we was abit slow of the mark for a few minutes , quarter consisted of big runs from the forwards making good yards . But it was brook who crossed first , but we quickly responded we meters up the pitch and finished with a lovely dummy from jack M to go over . Great cover tackles from tadgh then jack M but couldn't stop brook going over again . Quarter finished with solid from from chiz to go over .
   2nd Quarter
We started to wake up abit , but also did blackbrook . We had some great tackles from kian  and Harrison to force knock ons. But then blackbrook give us a bit of a lesson in spreading the ball out and manger to go over in the corner . Which we just couldn't stop . But this didn't stop our lads trying , again big runs from hilly Cody and elwick followed up with good offloads . Excellent tackle from Dee to start our defensive set , but again brook spread the ball and went over in corner .
   3rd Quarter
Quarter didn't start well with a try from brook , but this wouldn't keep our lads down , Deacon popped up with a little show and go and managed to find the line . Our defense was back to normal next set with big tackles from hilly chiz elwick and oscar to force turnover . Good team effort in next attack but with no reward unlucky boys , brook once again wiped the ball out to score , but we had the last laugh with Harrison going over right on the whistle .

4th quarter
The last quarter was the bat from out lads big shots were going in and Deacon finally got hold of the number 8 who been throwing round all day LOL . From them on it was Tit for Tat back and forward with no team backing down . The only try of the quarter  was from our smallest forward Aston LOL who shot through like a train to score the try

Excellent game from the boys I look forward to return fixture

   Tries - jack , Chiz , Harrison , Deacon , Aston

Wigan St Judes V Thatto Heath Shields U7’s.
St Judes welcomed a strong Thatto Heath team to the meadow on a lovely Sunday morning. Judes started well from the kick off with Ryley Flynn running strong to score the first try of the game down the wing. Thatto Heath replied straight away with a try in the corner. Judes again replied with a strong run from Toby Hutchinson where he scored the try. Again, Judes let Thatto Heath straight back into it with them scoring a try in the corner. Good foot work from Liam Wood, sending Louis Baker and Daniel Williams over with a try each. Thatto Heath the next scorers, followed by another two strong runs and tries from Toby Hutchinson and George Stuart.
2ND QUARTER.
A total team change for Judes began well with Oliver Williams dancing his way around the defenders to score out wide, an excellent run from William Cobley resulted in George Stuart going over for another try for St Judes. Thatto Heath replied with a score of their own, from the re-start. Jayden Gaskell danced his way to the line, scoring a try. Then after strong defence, Oliver Williams went over for his second try of the game.
3RD QUARTER.
Both teams upped their defence with only a try a piece for each team, Liam Wood being the scorer for Judes with a full length run.
4TH QUARTER.
Defences of both teams were on top form, but excellent runs from Will Cobley resulted in Jayden Gaskell and Jake Critchley scoring tries. Thatto Heath replied scoring a try of their own. Thomas Atherton crossing the line with an outstanding effort. Oliver Williams did a big copybook tackle saving Thatto Heath from scoring a try. The scoring was concluded with a try from Harry Wiswell .
An excellent game of rugby from both teams, a performance outstanding from the Judes U7’s.
