Judes  38  v  Leigh Miners  4

Another week of 2 games from this re-arranged mid-week fixture against Leigh Miners.  It was certainly a game of 2 halves, which thankfully was put to bed in the first half.  Judes were off to an explosive start as Ryan Wood collected the kick-off and took Miners by surprise as he just kept going, evading defenders to score at the other end.  The story of our first half was good work up the middle from our forwards and good hands out to our wings to record points.  Alfie Whittle was soon rewarded from this move with a run were he cut inside, ensuring he stayed in the field of play and plonked down over the whitewash.  Judes were good at keeping the ball alive in this game and it paid off when Harvey Makin scored one of his signature tries, crashing onto the ball and diving over the try line.  Judes were making territory with ease and good hands again out to Alfie, who did get over the try line, but good goal line defence held him up.  The ball was then switched to the opposite wing and quick hands created the overlap for Reagan Hunter to dive over and score.  Leigh never gave up and after a ball steal set off and looked sure to score, but good tracking by Lewis all the way down field stopped the player inches from the line.  A loose pass though by Miners gifted the ball back to Judes and a final try of the half was scored by Callum Silcock who has showed some fantastic support play and was rewarded with a couple of touches in the set and a score under the sticks.  All conversions taken by Callum Silcock and James Richardson respectively, saw Judes in command of this game 26-0.

It was as though a different team came out for Judes second half and couldn’t seem to get out of their own half for a good 5-10 minutes.  Leigh put us under relentless pressure though and have to say Judes scrambling defence was fantastic and did hold them out for a good 10 minutes, before Miners relentless pressure paid off from a pin-point grubber kick that they followed up well to score in the corner.  Miners kept the pressure on and forced a drop-out from some solid defence, but this was the turning point for Judes second half, after good defence and numerous tackles from Reece to contain Miners, Judes got ball in hand and a good opening drive from Kenzie set the platform to build and excellent passing to Reagan Hunter who went for his second from a dancing run to dive over while under strong defensive pressure to score a superb try.  Judes weren’t clinical in attack second half, but found some spirit and execution in the last 15 minutes of the game and Reece Stanton topped off the game with doing what he does best and just steam rollers his way down field and is unstoppable when he gets going, scoring a strong individual effort under the sticks.  Conversions from James Richardson, brought the game to a close with a good victory to Judes 38-4.

Certainly a game of 2 halves today and our opponents came out stronger second half, but some great desire from Judes defensively to keep our opponents to just 4 points.  Was nice to see the full squad getting game time and have to say that each player off the bench came on and really contributed to the game.

Today Man of the Match:             Reece Stanton, a massive player for Judes in both stature and ability. Very hard to stop and was a tackling machine in this game.

Outstanding Efforts:                       Richard Nsemba, strong running in the forwards & Aaron Robinson, who came off the bench and showed great desire

Our second game was played today, where we had a top of the table clash with Halton Farnworth Hornets.  We secured

the 2 points in this game too after another superb victory 32-12, keeping our unbeaten record going strong.  Tries in

this game from Leon McIntosh, Ryan Wood, Richard Nsemba, Alfie Whittle, Callum Silcock and Lewis Pinder and

conversions taken by our very own Botica, James Richardson.  Man of the Match performance from Lewis Pinder and

outstanding efforts from Callum Silcock and our captain Kalan Devine.

Under 11’s – Golds

Wigan St Judes Golds 38 Thatto Heath Crusaders 10

There were lots of nerves going into today's game from the kids as we knew that Thatto had a huge squad, many of whom had played at a much higher level for a long time. We just asked the kids to put on a good show and try their best...they didn't disappoint!

Austin Daniel opened the scoring for the Golds, running across the attacking line and showing the ball to every runner. The dummies confusing the Crusaders defence just enough for Austin to nip through a gap out wide, breaking down the wing to score in the corner. The wind taking Keegan Mobey's perfect kick just off course! 4-0

A big defensive set saw Judes force a Thatto knock on, with huge tackles from Forwards Jake Hare and Malachi Price. The Golds took advantage of this well-positioned turn over and drove the ball up the middle, scrum half Keegan Mobey running the ball to the wing and drawing the defence before a a great offload sent Dylan Gregory crashing over the line. Great play! Austin Daniel adding the two 10-0

Judes followed with another fantastic defensive set holding the Crusaders at half way on the 5th, however, a small slip in concentration from the Golds and great hands from Thatto saw them nip in under the sticks for a well deserved try, the conversion sailing just below the bar 10- 4

Some poor play for the next couple of minutes saw both sides knocking on, a very fast set from Judes however saw the Thatto line caught unorganised and allowed Malachi Price too much room, Mal went over for his 1st and Judes 3rd. Dylan Gregory's powerful foot adding the extras 16-4

A superb defensive set with huge shots on our own try line from Malachi Price, Elton Paplekaj, Jake Hare and Malick Niang saw the score stay the same, going in at half time a well earned 12 points to the good. 16 - 4

From the restart, Austin Daniel put in a powerful kick that none of the opposition seemed to want to get beneath, a great chase from the Golds putting the Thatto full back under pressure, he kicked it forward and his team mate picked it up in an offside position. One drive forward from Jake Hare was all it took, tackled just shy of the line, Elton Paplekaj spied his chance and dove over from a quick scoot. Elton also kicking the two with ease. 22-4

Thatto drove forward once more from the restart, Judes pipped back to their own line once more but again stood firm, refusing the Crusaders any points. Turnover on our own line, we had some work to do, but Malachi Price smashed through the Thatto defensive line with a strength that proved just too much for the Thatto kids, another full lengther for the big guy, converted by fellow prop, Jake Hare.

28-4

Thatto's passing was some of the best we had seen at this age group, so the defensive efforts of our lads today was extra impressive. Holding the Crusaders out once more we drove the ball up again with great running from the quick feet of Aron Fleming, Daniel Nanyn and Freddie Winnard. Keegan Mobey then taking off down the right wing with time and room to score he opted to give his team mate the points hitting Malick Niang on the wing. Good sportsmanship and friendship shining through, brilliant attitude Keegan. Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen adding the two without problem, 34-4

The lads were shattered now, with no subs due to injury they had all given their absolute all to the game but, desperate to complete the hatrick, Big Malachi Price pushed forward on tired but determined legs to grab his third try, another full lengther from the beast! The wind taking the ball from Aron Fleming's kicking tee, causing the ball to fall as he kicked it 38- 4

Thatto's last set of the game showed how resilient a team they are, they never gave up throughout the match and deserved to bag a last minute try, a successful kick saw the final score 38-10 to home team!

Well done Golds!

Picking the awards was extremely tough after huge defensive efforts from Malachi, Jake, Aron,Paddy and Austin. Amazing running from the big lads all day and wonderful control from Keegan and Austin. We felt they all deserved a trophy from today! But the big lads shone today, with no breaks they worked so hard with unstoppable running and huge counts we couldn't have asked for more and Malaki 'Paddy' Cullen had his best ever game, his best tackle count and much more involvement going forward. We felt it only fair to share it out between them today.

The best defensive display we have seen so far. Austin Daniel ordering the team from the back and doing a fine job too! Defence wins games ! Well done, great TEAM win!
