In the final league action of 2017 at the Meadow St Jude’s entertained Cumbrians Askam who nearly spoilt the day as with 5 mins to go and leading by 8 points Jude’s looked down and out, but a dramatic late surge saw Jude’s score 10 points in the final 5 mins and secure the home advantage in the playoffs finishing a creditable 3rd in the league. Jude’s made a flying start after 7 mins when Gavin Rodden burst clear to feed Adam Lavin who found Man of the Match Daz Ball in support and the Dazzler did the rest right under the posts , Rob Collier goaled. Then Jude’s line defence was put to test as lively Askam attacked their line , Oly Oladele, Tom Owen, Nathan Bevan, Paul Pendlebury, Gavin Rodden and Leon Harber working hard to stop the raids. On 12 mins the visitors scored a somewhat easy try when Jude’s defence failed to reset around the the play the ball area. Jude’s next score was great rugby when Nathan Bevan, Rob Fenney , Rob Collier and Paul Pendlebury found Centre Connor Parkinson who stepped his way over, Collier obliged with the boot 12-6 to Jude’s. But Askam came right back with another score which was quickly followed with a second under the sticks and the visitors had took a 18-12 lead. As halftime approached Jude’s took advantage of Askams indiscipline and Jude’s attack was rewarded when Rob Colliers inside ball to Nathan Bevan who shot over for a try, Collier goaled and Jude’s went in 18-18. Jude’s maintained that momentum into the second half with Ben Jones, Robbie Horton, Luke Barrett, Leon Harber, Gavin Rodden and Nathan Bevan setting the platform, but it was The visitors who scored next to take a 24-18 lead. Replacements Gary McMahon and Ben Fisher came on and from the onset Jude’s drive to win the Match was there for all to see and it was young Gary McMahon who scored when he spotted a gap around the ruck as he darted in for a score 22-24 to Askam. But the visitors struck again to take a 8 point lead into the final 20 mins. Facing defeat the Judes rallied and Ben Fisher, Gavin Rodden and Gary McMahon started to string passes together and on 75 mins Winger David Fagan scored wide out of a Adam Lavin pass, young Ben Fisher Coolly slotted over the two points from wide out which set up a frantic final 2 mins. In the final minute Jude’s regathered a Askams loose carry and Rob Fenney, Ben Fisher, Gary McMahon and Adam Lavin whose final pass found Winger David Fagan who managed to squeeze in wide out with seconds to spare, not enough time for the visitors to get back and a relieved Jude’s started their celebrations. Next week Askam at home  bring on the play offs.
